Italian Serie A club Lazio has crunched the numbers on how much the revamp of the new Stadio Flaminio will cost and how big its capacity will be.

Corriere dello Sport said all the documents are now in the hands of the Municipality of Rome which will make a decision on the project.

SS Lazio unveiled an ambitious proposal in December 2024 for a €438 million renovation of the abandoned 30,000 seat Olympic stadium (Stadio Flaminio) in Rome, Italy to make it the club’s new home.

The driving force behind Stadio Flaminio’s rebuild is Claudio Lotito, the President of SS Lazio, one of the biggest names in Serie A football. His plan has already been approved by Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

SS Lazio is an Italian professional sports club based in Rome, Italy, which plays in Serie A and has spent most of its history in the top tier of Italian football.

They currently play at the Stadio Olimpico, a multipurpose sports venue located in Rome, Italy. Seating over 70,000 spectators, it is the largest sports facility in Rome and the second-largest in Italy after the 75,817-capacity San Siro in Milan, Italy.

The preliminary studies and financial-economic plan for the renovation of Stadio Flaminio are now finally available.

Probably the most interesting news for fans is that the modernization work is anticipated to cost €438.2 million.

Lazio would take on €283 million in 30-year loans for the project, another €85.6 million would come through self-financing, €24 million from public contributions. The remaining €45.6 million would cover the cost of VAT.

If the Municipality, as Lotito hopes, responds positively to the proposals by the beginning of 2026, work could begin a few months later.

By mid-2029 this should lead to a completed stadium with 50,750 seats (47,235 reserved for the home team).

Of these, 13,790 would be in the new Curva Nord, 9,995 in the Tribuna Sud, 13,320 in the Tribuna Est and 9,895 to the Tribuna Ovest.

The expansion work would comply to UEFA standards and advance the candidacy (already included in the plan) to “host the final phase of the Euro 2032 European Football Championship“.

Another important aspect concerns mobility. The project includes a long series of interventions.

The plan presented by Lazio includes a modal split scenario for local spectators: of these, 35% will arrive by subway, 15% by bus, 5% by tram/train, 25% by car, 11% by motorbike, 3% by bike, 0.5% by taxi, 4% by bus and the remaining 1-2% on foot.

Corriere dello Sport said it is a crucial moment for the Stadio Flaminio plans because the Municipality is also being asked to express its opinion on the only competing project, that of Roma Nuoto (much less demanding in terms of interventions and investments), for which the conference of services has already been underway for weeks.

For this proposal, only the possible public interest is awaited: now, all things being equal, the choice will be political and the option capable of enhancing the city the most will be chosen.
