Milan’s (Italy) new soccer stadium, due to replace the historic San Siro ground, will be ready in time for the start of the 2030-2031 Serie A seasons, the top-flight club AC Milan Chairman Paolo Scaroni said recently.

‘Reuters’ stated that the Serie A team AC Milan is leading the project which won the City Council approval recently alongside the City rivals and the Serie A team b. The nearly century-old San Siro is set to be knocked down in favor of a more modern facility.

Milan’s new soccer stadium, which will replace the old San Siro, is planned to be a 71,500-seat facility. It is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2030-2031 Serie A seasons with construction beginning in 2027. The project is being led by both the AC Milan and the Inter Milan.

The Milan or AC Milan is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy (Italy). Founded in 1899, the club competes in the Serie A, the top tier of Italian football.

The Inter or Inter Milan is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy (Italy). Inter is the only Italian team to have always participated in the top division of Italian football (Serie A) since its debut in 1909 and the only one that has never been relegated to Serie B.

The San Siro is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy. It has a seating capacity of 75,817 making it the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest stadiums in Europe.

‘Reuters’ quoted Scaroni as stating, “Our aim is to complete the stadium in 2030 and work should start in 2027.”

First the clubs need to sign off on the purchase of the old ground, a necessary step prior to its demolition. Scaroni said that should happen by the end of the month.

It will then take more than a year to finalize the project for the new stadium which includes a broader redevelopment of the San Siro area with commercial and residential buildings and secure planning approval, he added.

Italy is under growing pressure to upgrade the quality of its soccer arenas driven by the foreign investors backing the Serie A clubs and the need for more functional venues for the 2032 European Championship which Italy will co-host with Turkey.

The new stadium should also help the Milanese clubs substantially increase their matchday revenue which currently lags behind their European rivals, Scaroni said.

The plan to demolish the old San Siro has faced opposition from the politicians, the local citizens’ committees and others who would have liked to preserve one of the temples of Italian soccer.

The 2032 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Men’s European Football Championship, commonly referred to as UEFA EURO 2032, will be the 19th UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship organized by the UEFA for the senior Men’s national teams of its member associations. Italy and Turkey will host the tournament which is expected to take place between June and July 2032.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is one of six continental bodies of governance in association football. It governs football, futsal and beach football in Europe and the transcontinental countries of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Kazakhstan as well as the West Asian countries of Cyprus, Armenia and Israel. The UEFA consists of 55 national association members. Since 2022, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the FIFA and the UEFA has suspended all Russian national teams and clubs from any FIFA and UEFA competitions.
