Milan City Council has officially approved the sale of the iconic San Siro stadium to Serie A clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Yahoo Sports said the sale clears the way for both clubs to move forward with plans to build a modern stadium and potentially demolish the San Siro.

The approval could lead to the 99-year-old ground and its surrounding areas being sold to both clubs for €197 million, but it still needs to be officially confirmed by the city government.

The clubs said it is “a historic and decisive step for the future of the clubs and the city”.

The San Siro Stadium (also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza) is a football stadium in the San Siro district of Milan, Italy. It has a seating capacity of 80,018 making it the largest stadium in Italy and one of the largest stadiums in Europe. It is the home stadium of the Serie A teams AC Milan and Inter Milan.

The San Siro has been AC Milan’s stadium since 1926, but it has not been modernised since the 1990 World Cup.

The two clubs last month picked architectural firms Foster + Partners and MANICA to design their new stadium.

They said the collaboration reaffirms their strong commitment to delivering a stadium that meets the highest standards of innovation, comfort, and sustainability, and will also stand out as an architectural landmark.

The new venue, part of an urban regeneration project covering approximately 281,000 square meters and focused on innovation and sustainability, will have a capacity of 71,500 seats and will offer an unparalleled atmosphere.

It will feature two large tiers with an incline designed to ensure optimal visibility from every section.

It will also meet the highest accessibility standards, providing dedicated experiences for all fans and offering sections with affordable pricing.

The clubs are aiming for the new venue to be ready in time for Euro 2032, which Italy are joint hosts of alongside Turkey.

The clubs said in a joint statement, “The clubs look ahead with confidence and responsibility to the next steps of the process that will lead to the creation of a new stadium meeting the highest international standards – a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world.”

For Milan and Inter, this is a huge step forward. It promises to boost local infrastructure, create jobs, and attract international events for years to come.
