It’s hard to believe that the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, Minnesota (US) has hit a quarter century with most fans agreeing the arena doesn’t seem to show its age.
‘FOX 9’ stated that but the owners and the operators say it’s due for major mechanical overhauls and, while they’re at it, deserving of major renovations in order to reclaim its state-of-the-art status.
The 20,554-capacity Xcel Energy Center is a multipurpose arena in Saint Paul, Minnesota, United States. Completed in 2000 and often called ‘The X’ by the fans it is named for its locally based corporate sponsor Xcel Energy. It serves as the home ground of the National Hockey League (NHL) team Minnesota Wild.

Keeping Up With Other Cities
‘FOX 9’ further stated that the Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter and the National Hockey League (NHL) team Minnesota Wild Owner Craig Leipold have been talking about these overhaul ideas for months. Recently, they took that talk to the State Capitol testifying in front of the House Capitol Investment Committee.
Carter told the lawmakers, “The arena complex must be modernized to stay competitive. Not just with the other NHL arenas and entertainment venues but within our own market.”
Leipold stressed that the Wild are deeply entrenched in Saint Paul as if to emphasize this is not some sort of threat but also stressed that the arena is no longer keeping up with the newer facilities.
Leipold testified, “Twenty five (25) years and a global pandemic later the Xcel Energy Center is now at the end of its intended lifespan.”
The Cost Breakdown
What it Costs: The $769 million price tag would be split: The State would pay about half while the Wild pays 30 percent and the City and the other local partners covering the other 20 percent.
The Wild want to change the concessions and alter some of the seating. Leipold mentioned how the newer stadiums and the arenas incorporate more open spaces to watch the games – “We have 74 suites right now, we’ll probably have only 50. And that will create more opportunities for us to have different ways that the fans can buy the tickets and watch and view the game.”
No Specific Bill Yet
What’s Next: There is currently no bill to provide the asked-for funding. The team and the City are still working with the legislators and the other partners to determine the exact language and the other parameters that would be included.

Reinvesting in the Economic Engine of Saint Paul
‘SAINT PAUL MINNESOTA’ further stated that the Arena Complex stands as the most prolific driver of economic activity in the Capital City – no single business or entity attracts more people to Downtown Saint Paul. Each year, the Arena Complex serves over 2.1 million visitors and contributes $383 million in spending for the City of Saint Paul.
The Xcel Energy Center was constructed in 2000 at a cost of $173 million with 30 percent of the funding contributed by public sources and the remaining 70 percent invested by the Minnesota Wild. It needs critical reinvestment to improve accessibility, enhance the visitor and the vendor experience and upgrade infrastructure, technological, space needs.
Economic Rejuvenation Opportunity
- The Arena Complex currently generates an annual $383 million in local spending across lodging, meals, transportation, and other goods and services;
- The proposed renovation is estimated to boost the annual spending to $493 million;
- The project is estimated to create approximately 2,300 union construction jobs; and
- When complete the complex will employ more than 5,000 people in Saint Paul.
