Fabled Munich Stadium holds soccer match

Olympiastdion Muenchen first game after 15 years

FC Bayern & Olympiastadion Muenchen

The Olympic Stadium in Munich (Germany) reopened its doors after 15 long years on October 10th, 2020, to stage a historic soccer match between German association football clubs Türkgücü Munich (based in Munich, Germany) and Wehlen Wiesbaden (based in Wiesbaden, Germany) which ended in a goalless draw. For 15 long years, no soccer matches was held in the arena.

It is a historic match in the sense that the legendary Olympic Stadium in Munich returned to staging football matches 15 years after Bayern Munich left and eight years after the Women’s Champions League final between Lyon (France) and Frankfurt (Germany). The facility was built specifically as the main venue for the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Though spectators was expected for the match, but eventually it had to be a closed doors affair as coronavirus has again resurged in Germany. Initially, plans were being made to welcome 5,000 fans into the stadium fold, but a rise in the number of COVID-19 infections meant that those plans had to be scrapped.

Türkgücü Munich has got the nod from multiple City bodies and the Olympic Commission to play at least eight games in the Olympic Stadium this season. This was the first-ever time the venue has played host to a third division game.

The last game of the most successful club in Germany – Bayern Munich – was held in the Olympic Stadium on May 14th, 2005, against FC Nürnberg – the German association football club based in Nuremberg, Bavaria, in Germany, who presently competes in 2. Bundesliga. After that, soccer giants Bayern moved to Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Bayern had won the match.
