Marbella F.C. Foundation has been given a boost in its bid to build a new stadium in the southern Spanish city.

Marbella Today said Marbella Town Hall has begun the procedure to start the new stadium project with an investment of between €115-130 million.

Marbella F.C. plays in the Segunda Federacion, the fourth tier of Spanish football. The new venue will come up on the site of Marbella’s present home ground – the 7,300-capacity Estadio de Marbella. The new project would lead to the removal of the athletics track from the present site.

Demolition of Marbella’s old stadium and construction will begin in parallel after the summer, according to the Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz.

She said, “It is going to become a reality thanks to the drive, decision and seriousness of the club in complying with the requirements that were established. This will mean a qualitative leap for the town that goes beyond sport.”

The stadium will increase its capacity from 8,000 to 10,000 spectators and will have a 1,500 square metre high-performance centre, a commercial area, a car park with 1,000 spaces and a sports residence with 90 rooms.

The new venue will be adapted to become an official sub-host of the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. It is expected to take three years to complete.

Club representative Esteban Granero said, “Our purpose is to make an integrated stadium that is an iconic space and that meets the demands of citizens, club fans and sport in general.”

A competition to design the new stadium was won by Huete Arquitectos, while the foundation has had the support as a strategic partner of the consulting firm KPMG and with a network of collaborators and specialized companies.

Granero said between 1,600 and 2,300 new jobs would be created and the GDP impact would be between €36-50 million euros, which represents 0. 2% of the entire province of Malaga.

He added, “We have taken references from international organizations such as FIFA and UEFA to guarantee that the new stadium complies with the regulations that allow it to become an official sub-venue for the 2030 World Cup in Spain, Portugal and Morocco and hold matches of men’s under-21 national teams, women’s senior national teams and friendly matches between internationally renowned clubs, musical events and shows.

“The fact that the foundation presents the report guarantees the public interest of the project. These include the promotion of grass-roots sport, enhancing the image of tourism for the city and developing programs for young people at risk of social exclusion.”
