Qatar will deliver its first three arenas for the 2015 Handball World Championship

Qatar is set to host the 24th edition of the World Men’s Handball Championship next year. The tournament will be held from 15th of January to 1st of February, 2015 and make Qatar will only the second country in the Middle East to have hosted the event after Egypt in 1999.

The games of the tournament will be played in Doha and in the newly created town of Lusail. Three new venues are being constructed for the tournament:

 

Lusail Multipurpose Hall, Lusail

With a planned capacity of 15,300 seats, Lusail Hall will become the main venue of the tournament. The hall is currently under construction and due to be opened in November 2014.

The Qatar Olympic Committee has hired Beirut-based international giant Dar Al Handasah as lead consultant for the venue. The design is being handled by Cox Architects.

A master plan for the arena site includes the Multipurpose Hall itself, an administration building, six football fields and a mosque for 150 worshippers. Inside the hall, there will be an event floor that measures 60 by 50 metres, a training court, support facilities, four changing rooms, lounges, gymnasiums for men and women, along with medical and massage areas.

The hall will be surrounded by a massive landscape of 350.000 square metres, decorated with colorful shaded trees, walking/jogging and bicycling tracks, an outdoor covered gym, as well as covered and uncovered kids playgrounds.

 

Al Sadd Sports Hall, Al-Sadd district, Doha

The new hall with a planned capacity of 7,700 seats will be a part of the Al-Sadd Club Sports Complex. It is being designed by Yasser Al Khalil of James Cubit and Partners.

With a total footprint of 16,000 square metres in a built up area of 54,000 square metres, Al Sadd Sports Hall will house one main and two training grounds.

In terms of design, the dynamic and oval shape of its exterior will give a distinct identity to the new sport facility.

 

Qatar Handball Association Complex, Lekhwiya, Doha

The complex, with a total built-up area of approx. 40,000 square metres, will include an arena with a planned capacity of 5,500 seats. It is being constructed on a 30,000 square metres land area of softscaping, water feature, parking spaces and paved walkways.

A masterplan of the complex includes 2 training halls; 60-bedroom players’ accommodation, restaurant and lounges; QHA administration and media offices;

presidential and exclusive lounges; medical centre; gymnasium; and swimming pool and grandstands.
The project has been designed as a sustainable ‘Green’ building and is being executed by two primary agencies: IGH (Architectural and Interior) and WSP Middle East (Structural, MEP and Geotechnical Engineering).

Besides the aforementioned venues currently being built in Lusail, Al Sadd and Lekhwiya, the famous Aspire Dome in Doha will also host qualifying group stage matches.
