Sydney building steepest football stadium

The currently under-construction Western Sydney Stadium is poised to become the world’s steepest football stadium with its stand reportedly tilted at an angle of 34 degrees, according to several media reports.

“The playing field is sunk seven metres below ground level, and rising out of that is 30,000 seats at a 34-degree angle. That is the steepest in the world and more than Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, which is considered the best rectangular stadium in the country,” The Sydney Morning Herald reported after one of its correspondent was given an exclusive tour of the partially-built stadium.

“There’s an LED big screen in one corner and a wide, open concourse that wraps around the entire stadium, allowing fans to buy a beer and some hot chips and then turn around and look directly below at the footy,” the Herald said.
It is, in every sense, a modern-day Colosseum, it added.

The stadium, which will be equipped with many state-of-the-art facilities, has a seating capacity of 30,000, and the steep seats are intended to bring audiences as close to the action as possible, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The venue will attract top name acts and sporting blockbusters and boast the latest technology and seats closer to action than ever before,” News South Wales State Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said.

He said the development will be a “game changer.”

When a cost of 300 million Australian dollars ($223.76 million), the stadium is set to be completed in April 2019, making it the first new stadium to be built in Sydney since the one built for the 2000 Olympics.

About 300 workers are currently working on the stadium, which is expected to host the Western Sydney Wanderers soccer team and the Parramatta Eels Rugby League.
