Architects Fenwick Iribarren, in partnership with structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann Partner and multidisciplinary engineering consultancy firm Hilson Moran will be building the first ever demountable, transportable and reusable stadium in the world for the 2022 FIFA World Cup™ in Qatar.

Commissioned by the Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, the structure of the Ras Abu Aboud Stadium with a capacity of 40,000 will be constructed using 990 modified shipping containers supplied by a Shenzhen based Chinese company CIMC (China International Marine Containers) according to a news report in Qatar Tribune.

Wang Fei, Project Manager told the stadium will be built in phases with the initial phase involving the construction of steel framework. The containers will be installed inside this framework like Lego building blocks before being painted.

He added that the prefabricated modular structure enables use of lesser material, reducing waste and carbon emissions and in turn reducing the time taken for the construction.

An ECNS website report said that large scale mass production of the containers will start in July with the delivery of first batch in October. As per the schedule, fabrication of all the containers will be complete by April 2019 with the project completion in June 2020.

Hassan al Thawadi, Secretary General of Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, said in November last year, “Innovation has always been central to our plans for delivering a historic FIFA World Cup™ that leaves a legacy for Qatar and the world, and there is no better example of this than the design of Ras Abu Aboud Stadium.”

Following the FIFA World Cup™, the stadium will be dismantled to make way for a waterfront development, but the various components of the arena will be used for decades to come.
