Madrid okays demolition of Vicente Calderon

The Madrid Municipality has finally given the approval to demolish the Vicente Calderon stadium, former home to Atletico Madrid, by December, according to a report by Football Espana website. The new plans involve urbanisation of the area into houses and green spaces.

The €42.2 million project which will last for two years and ten months will see the area alongside the Manzanares River constructed with houses and green spaces to create a modern living space for its residents.

According to Diario AS, a Spanish daily sports newspaper, by the end of the year, the old stands and infrastructure will be removed with some of the structures already demolished as operations have been progressively moved out of the stadium.

The first stage of the project will see the demolition of the stadium except the stand located on the M-30 motorway. The stand will be removed once the traffic is reorganised and diverted appropriately reports Marca.com.

The first area to undergo renovation will be between Paseo de los Pontones, Paseo Imperial and Paseo de los Melancolicos. Followed by this, the area between Paseo de los Melancolicos and Duque de Tovar Street will see a makeover.

The third stage will involve construction of a new park and green spaces.

The Vicente Calderon has been home to Atletico Madrid for 51 seasons. The club has now moved to Wanda Metropolitano last season.
