Hertha BSC Berlin is planning to move out of Olympiastadion and into a new 55,000 seat stadium in Olympic park by 2025 according to their official website report. Hertha BSC wants a pure football arena which will be 100 percent privately financed says Werner Gegenbauer, President of the club.

The architecture and planning firm Albert Speer+Partner (AS+P) tested over 50 locations inside and outside the city limits of Berlin for sustainability to construct the new stadium. The main criteria for the selection of the location were size of the area, connectivity, availability and the potential of development.

The area which best fulfilled all the criteria were The Olympic Park, next to the Olympic Stadium and also the first choice of the club for the new stadium.

There were several factors leading to this decision of a new stadium for the club. The current contract with the Olympiastadion ends in 2025. Also, Hertha BSC is the last Bundesliga club without a pure football stadium. The club acknowledges that the current stadium is suitable for only major national and international games. Hertha are utilising only 64 percent of the current stadium for home games, with the average attendance at 50,000 this season as opposed to the Bundesliga average of 92 percent according to sources.

According to Hertha President, Gegenbauer, the Berlin Senate understands the need for a new building for Hertha BSC and that they cannot be denied a future because of the limitations on the current venue. Olympic park seems to be the obvious choice as there is already an existing infrastructure to go with it.

As the next step towards the realization of the stadium, the club together with the architects will work out a feasible cost estimate depending on the location to be taken up with relevant authorities.
