The Hong Kong government has awarded a contract for the design, construction and operation of the proposed Kai Tak Sports Park to a subsidiary of New World Development Company, according to government press release.

The contract was secured by Kai Tak Sports Park following an open tendering exercise. It is valid for a period of 25 years, including four to five years for the design and construction phase, as well as 20 years for the operation phase.

To be built at the site of Kai Tak Airport, Kowloon, Kai Tak Sports Park is a multipurpose sports stadium covering an area of 28 hectare.

“We are looking forward to working closely with Kai Tak Sports Park’s team to create a world-class sports park with high-quality facilities for the use and enjoyment of the sports sector and the Hong Kong community,” the press release quoted an unnamed government spokesman as saying.

Kai Tak Sports Park’s project team members include Populous, SMG and Lagardère Sports.

“We are looking forward to working closely with Kai Tak Sports Park’s team to create a world-class sports park with high-quality facilities,” the spokesman said.

The project construction cost is estimated at HK$29.99bn ($3.82bn), which will be funded by the government.

Kai Tak Sports Park is responsible for all operating expenses and will offer 3% of the gross income and an additional HK$1.72bn ($219.6m) during the operation phase.

The design of the sports complex comprises a covered Kai Tak Sports Avenue. The developer plans to connect all key facilities of the Sports Park with the adjacent Station Square, Kai Tak MTR Station and Sung Wong Toi MTR Station.

The sports park will have a 50,000-seat main stadium, with a soundproof retractable roof and flexible pitch surface. The stadium will be developed with ‘Pearl of the Orient’ as the façade design theme.

Kai Tak Sports Park will also feature separation drapes, stage setting and various equipment at the main stadium in order to accommodate entertainment and community events.

Other key infrastructure at the facility include a 10,000-seat multipurpose indoor sports centre, a 5,000-seat public sports ground, 850 parking spaces and recreational facilities, including outdoor ball courts, open lawn areas, children’s play areas, fitness stations, health and wellness centre, bowling centre, and retail, food and beverage outlets.

The developer will incorporate sustainable design features such as a photovoltaic system, roof greening, vertical greening and parking areas with electric vehicle charging facilities.

The sports complex will also be equipped with smart initiatives, including an intelligent building management system, Wi-Fi hotspots, an indoor positioning system, and an intelligent car park management system.

Kai Tak Sports Park will begin construction works in the first quarter of next year, with completion expected in 2023.
