The Kansas City Chiefs announced a new addition to Arrowhead Stadium recently through its official Twitter handle. The new feature is a special section in the upper deck called the “Drum Deck.”

The “Drum Deck” will be located around section 335 and will house the famous drum that is brought to the field for the Chiefs’ pregame pump-up ceremonies at Arrowhead.

Some notable Kansas City stars have pounded the Chiefs’ drum for pregame ceremonies in years past. Former Chiefs RB Christian Okoye banged the drum before K.C.’s 41-14 win over the New England Patriots on “Monday Night Football” in 2014, and current Kansas City Royals standouts Salvador Perez and Alex Gordon have taken their turns pounding the drum as well.

The creation of the “Drum Deck” comes just as the Chiefs are celebrating their 60th season, starting with their Dallas Texans days in the American Football League in the early 1960s.

Arrowhead Stadium has been going through a number of renovations over the offseason, which has included upgrades to the seats in the upper level. Seats were removed in order for waterproofing measures to be installed that would protect the stadium’s club seating areas as well as maintain the structural integrity of the stadium’s concrete, then after the waterproofing was completed, new seats were installed that featured cup holders.

Also among the renovation plans were the implementation of new LED panels to be installed on the Arrowvision scoreboard on the west side of the stadium, which would allow fans to have a much clearer view of in-game footage. The drum deck was not among that previously announced set of renovations.

Arrowhead Stadium last saw significant renovations in 2009 when a $375 million project resulted in improved lighting and electrical technology, bigger concourses, more restrooms, a new video ribbon board, and an upgraded scoreboard, among numerous other additions including the Founder’s Club and the Hall of Honor.

“It has been a decade since our last major renovation to Arrowhead Stadium was completed and we’ve been taking an extensive look at areas we can address as we move towards future seasons,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said in January, per Chiefs.com. “We are excited about these projects and look forward to the work beginning in the coming days and weeks.”
