The Empire State Development Corporation recently green lighted a proposal to build a billion-dollar arena at Belmont Park. The controversial billion-dollar arena at Belmont Park will be of 19,000-seat capacity and will also comprise a 250-room hotel and is set to open in 2021.

The proposal got the nod from all six board members of the Corporation after a meeting in Manhattan and would set the construction process rolling for the New York Islanders’ next home.

“We are proud of the open, public process this project has gone through over the last two years, strengthened by the input and support of community members who made their voices heard and helped improve the plan, resulting in a positive outcome,” board Chairman Howard Zemsky said after the approval.

Reports stated that the arena will spread across 43 acres of state-owned property at Belmont Park. The stadium will be built by a private development company, the Mets and the owners of the Islanders.
