AFC Wimbledon have been given the green light for an historic switch back to Plough Lane, after Merton Council approved their application to build a new stadium.

Merton Council’s Planning Committee said yes to a 20,000-seater stadium in the borough on December 10, paving the way to a return to their spiritual home for the club. The old Plough Lane was demolished 13 years ago, having being home to the old Dons for eight decades.

Wimbledon left the site in 1991, then using Selhurst Park and the National Hockey Stadium in Milton Keynes until Pete Winkelman’s controversial decision to re-name the club MK Dons.

That move prompted AFC Wimbledon to rise from the phoenix and, after flying through non-league and into the top four divisions, the phoenix club now want to be back at their old spiritual home.
