A new sports complex could be coming to Springfield in Illinois, US. Right now, the plan is to potentially put a sports complex next to SCHEELS (the destination sporting goods store) on the south end of the city. The whole project would consume an estimated $65 million.

The overview of this plan was presented to Springfield’s Committee of the Whole during their meeting recently.

The place would be called the ‘Legacy Pointe Sports Complex’ and it’s intended to be a destination spot.

The Sports Facilities Advisory, which is a nationwide company, is spearheading this project.

“We don’t know what the economy will suffer or how it will be impacted over the next several years by what we’re experiencing right now,” Sports Facilities Advisory COO Evan Eleff stated.

“We do know that sports and recreation are well positioned, as they have been for the last decade, plus to help lead the rebound and lead the recovery from an economy standpoint,” Eleff added.

The sports complex would spread over a total of 95 acres. The Sports Facilities Advisory wants to put it adjacent to SCHEELS because that area boasts vast amount of land which would be apt to start a project of this magnitude and it would be very easily accessible from the highway.

This project has been in the works for at least a year and it’s currently in Phase Two of the process. This phase includes the feasibility of a sports complex in Springfield and what footprint will it leave on the city.

The Sports Facilities Advisory is looking to the Committee of the Whole to help fund the sports complex, but the City will not own the sports complex.
