new Camp Nou stadium for FC Barcelona

Japanese architectural firm Nikken Sekkei, in collaboration with Joan Pascual-Ramon Ausió Arquitectes, has been chosen to design the new Camp Nou stadium for FC Barcelona. The winning team was chosen over three other finalists: HKS + COX + Batell i Roig Arquitectes; BIG + IDOM + BAAS Arquitectes; POPULOUS + Mias Arquitectes + RCR Arquitectes.

FC Barcelona will offer an exclusive insights into the new design at the upcoming Coliseum Summit EUROPE at the Amsterdam ArenA.

The new design intends to compliment the recently unveiled New Palau Blaugrana, FC Barcelona’s main basketball arena that will be designed by HOK and TAC Arquitectes. All this is happening alongside the Espai Barça remodel that is expected to begin in 2017 and complete by 2021.

The jury was composed of five members of the club, three members of Col.legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya and a member of the City Council of Barcelona, according to La Vanguardia.

With capacity for 105,000 people and a total area of 104,000-square-meters, the sports institution expects to complete the construction of the Camp Nou in 2021.

“The Nikken Sekkei + Pascual i Ausió Arquitectes proposal stands out for being open, elegant, serene, timeless Mediterranean and democratic.” FC Barcelona says in its official website.

“It is also notable for its relationship with the environment, providing depth, creating shadows and making members the stars of the facade and of the open area at all times. The proposal presents a very subtle attempt to intervene in the environment to facilitate circulation and achieve diverse urban usage in the Barça Campus and guarantees a clear and safe construction,” the statement adds.

“In short, it is a unique solution, reproducing the characteristic vision of the grandstand and canopy, from the inside out, a silent and powerful tribute to the stadium built by Francesc Mitjans in 1957,” it concludes.
