Netherlands SC Cambuur stadium update Image: SC Cambuur

Holding company Van Wijnen of Netherlands will take over the work of restructuring the new Cambuur Stadium, the commercial buildings along Harlingertrekweg and the McDonald’s branch in Leeuwarden – the City in Netherlands. Work is expected to start in January 2022 and matches can be held from the 2023-2024 football seasons.

The Municipal Council will hold discussions on the above development soon.

‘SC Cambuur’ stated that to this end, Van Wijnen has brought on board the real estate developer Wyckerveste in Kerkrade, Netherlands, as the project developer. In fact, Van Wijnen has already been assigned the task of developing Cambuur Stadium.

The Cambuur Stadium is a football stadium which sits to the East side of the City of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. It is used for the home matches of SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden. The stadium is able to hold 10,500 people and opened on September 12th, 1936.

SC Cambuur-Leeuwarden is a Dutch football club from the City of Leeuwarden and was formed on June 19th, 1964. They play in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football, but will play in the Eredivisie (highest level of professional football in the Netherlands) from the 2021-2022 seasons after winning the 2020-2021 Eerste Divisie title.

Fiscal aid

‘SC Cambuur’ further stated that to make the entire redecoration work possible, the Municipality of Leeuwarden will have to provide the requisite financial aid.

The College of Mayor and Aldermen has proposed that the City Council greenlight the same. Furthermore, the development sits well within the existing agreements with the municipal council. The status quo of the zoning plan, urban development plan and development plan will remain the same.

Observed Hein de Haan, Alderman for Area Development, “The municipality is pleased with this breakthrough. With this integrated area development, the development of Nieuw Oud Oost on the site of the current football stadium can also continue.”

Alderman for Economic Affairs Friso Douwstra added, “The above development will come as a major economic boost for the entire WTC area and will help generate jobs.”

Oud-Oost is an officially designated area of the borough of Amsterdam-Oost (Amsterdam East) in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It consists of the areas closer to the City Center, traditionally known as Amsterdam East, before the borough was expanded. It is made up of the smaller neighborhoods: Dapperbuurt. Oosterparkbuurt.

Arjen Oosting, Director, Van Wijnen Project Development, stated, “Thanks to the agreements with the municipality as regards the financing of the stadium and the area development, the realization of a revamped football stadium for Cambuur is inching one step closer.”

Van Wijnen has entered into agreements with ROC Friese Poort (vocational training college of Netherlands) for the lease of a 7,500 square meter school building in the stadium.

Remco Meijerink, Chairman, Board of the ROC Friese Poort, maintained, “We are pleased that we have signed a lease agreement with Van Wijnen for space in the new Cambuur Stadium under conditions that do justice to our position as an educational institution. We see great added value for our education with a location in the WTC area. It will be an inspiring learning environment for our students. Learning within their future field of work gives a quality boost to our courses.”

Ard de Graaf, General Manager, SC Cambuur, stated, “We are happy with the above development. There are still hurdles to overcome, but at least the move has been made. The club getting promoted to Eredivisie has further necessitated the need to totally redevelop their residence. We can’t wait to move into the new Cambuur Stadium together with ROC Friese Poort.”
