Total redecoration work of the Athens Olympic Sports Centre (Greece) will cost over EUR 43.5 million. This information was given by the Prime Minister of Greece, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, recently.

‘The Mayor’ stated that Prime Minister Mitsotakis unfolded the country’s ‘Master Plan’ for the upgrade and renovation of the Athens Olympic Sports Centre ‘Spiros Louis’. Mitsotakis informed that the Sports Centre has not been renovated since the 2004 Olympic Games. Now, the new plan seeks to modernize the structure and make it more sustainable.

The 69,618-capacity Athens Olympic Sports Centre or ‘Spiros Louis’ is a sports facility complex which sits at Marousi in Northeast Athens, Greece. The complex consists of five major venues as well as other supplementary sport facilities.

The 2004 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad and commonly known as Athens 2004, was an international multisport event held from August 13th to August 29th, 2004 in Athens, Greece.

Fat funding

‘The Mayor’ further stated that following the outbreak of COVID-19 which has left the world severely bruised, the European Commission introduced the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) as a means of helping European Union (EU) Member-States recover from the negative impacts of coronavirus.

Mitsotakis added that the rehabilitation of the Athens Olympic Sports Centre is one of the top 10 projects in the country’s National Recovery Plan.

Therefore, the country will receive EUR 43.5 million from its Recovery and Resilience Fund ‘Greece 2.0’ for the implementation of the project. In addition to this, the Prime Minister further stated that the renovation will also be financed through private investments.

The Recovery and Resilience Facility (the Facility) of the European Commission will make €672.5 billion in loans and grants available to support reforms and investments undertaken by Member-States. The aim is to mitigate the economic and social impact of the coronavirus pandemic and make European economies and societies more sustainable, resilient and better prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the Green and digital transitions.

Presently, the Athens Olympic Sports Centre is spread over an area of 1,000 acres on which is lodged quite a few stadia, tracks, etc. Moreover, the footfall per day comes to 17,000 and 20,000 during the weekends.

The ‘Master Plan’ now seeks to create more futuristic facilities and rejig the existing stadiums, tracks and centers. Beyond this, it envisions the replacement of existing materials with ones that are environmental-friendly and sustainable as well as the creation of more verdant spaces.

Commenting on the project, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Lefteris Avgenakis, explained, “The facilities will be lent a futuristic touch and will consume less of energy which will pave the way for the development of sports in the country. The repurposed venue will mirror the culture and traditions of Greece, it will leave minimum carbon footprints and all measures will be initiated to ensure that the stadium operates in the most streamlined manner.”

Added Avgenakis, “The avant-garde center will undergo a 360 degree digital transformation.”

The Deputy Minister hoped that the planned development will result in a profitability increase of 25 percent, generate 1,400 permanent jobs and the footfall will rise to 40,000 per day.
