China Kunshan stadium construction update Image: GMP Architekten

Work is in progress on the Kunshan Football Stadium, about 60 kilometers from Shanghai (China), and the design has been lent by GMP Architekten. The stadium will host the 2023 AFC Asian Cup fixtures.

The ‘Sport & Impianti’ stated that the construction of the sports arena began in 2021 and the construction of the structure is half done with steel roof construction completed.

The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be the 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship of Asia organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). It will be hosted by China from June 16th to July 16th, 2023.

The ‘Sport & Impianti’ further stated that in the coming months, translucent membranes will be installed on the façade and on the roof itself to close the massive structure of the grandstand thus bringing the light inwards.

It is expected that the stadium work will be completed by 2022 end just in time for the soccer showpiece in 2023.

Oval in shape, the new stadium will be able to host a maximum of 45,000 spectators.

The distinctive façade design will result from a fan-shaped construction, with double concrete frames and cantilevered beams projecting into the roof area.

A system of radial paths will lead from the arena to the sports, recreation and catering areas.

The upper and lower levels of the Kunshan Football Stadium will be accessible via a system of bridges outside of the facility. This arrangement has been done so that in the case of an emergency, spectators can get out of the venue via the bridge which is the short cut.

A natural watercourse has been maintained on the site and plays a connecting role between the landscaped park and the stadium.
