In its spree to build world-class athletic centers, China recently announced plans to build a sports and cultural centre in Shenzhen. City officials in Shenzhen revealed in October this year that Dutch-based firm MVRDV has won the completion to design the Xili Sports and Cultural Center.

MVRDV will work on the project jointly with local firm Zhubo Architectural Design. The stated goal of this landmark venture is to “transform the lives of the different generations of people living nearby by offering a more humanistic model for sports and culture.”

The project will bring together a wide range of activities in this new experience centre with four distinct volumes and a total surface area of 105,000 square meter and is set to become ‘the’ social and well-being focal point of Shenzhen’s Dasha Green corridor. The centre will include a 20,000 square meter theatre, a 15,000 square meter basketball and badminton arena, a 10,000 square meter multifunctional arena and a 6,000 square meter swimming pool.

China’s first special economic zone Shenzhen is more and more fine-tuning its urban area. Located in a residential area along the Dasha Green Corridor,. which stretches from the Nanshan mountain park to the Yangtai mountain park, the soon-to-be realised Xili Sports and Cultural Centre aims to be an experience centre for sports, well-being, leisure and culture that seeks to achieve profound connections between nature, sports and culture, thus serving wide-ranging age groups and interests.

“We wanted to combine a large-scale sports stadium with a social aspect connecting it with the community,” said MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs in a statement.

Positioned at the very southeast corner of China, Shenzhen is next to Hong Kong and near Macau – two of the most densely populated and diverse parts of the region. Set between the Nanshan and Yangtai mountains, the Xili Sports and Cultural Center will also benefit from its stunning scenery. The complex’s design was very much influenced by its surroundings; in fact, because of them, MVRDV implemented an open layout that will be covered with vegetation throughout.

China’s latest endeavours in sports centers and stadium will be showcased prominently at the next Coliseum Summit ASIA, Beijing, September 2017.
