Saudi Arabia has won the bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games (AWG) in NEOM’s yet-to-be-built mountain resort Trojena.

‘Gulf Business’ stated that this was announced by Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Faisal, Minister of Sports, Saudi Arabia, on October 4th. The bid to host the games was made in August when the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC) submitted a letter of interest to the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).

The 2029 Asian Winter Games, officially known as the IX Asian Winter Games and commonly known as Trojena 2029, will be the ninth edition of the Asian Winter Games, a pan-Asian winter multisport event to be held in Trojena of NEOM, Saudi Arabia.

Trojena will be an iconic, world-class destination, blending natural and developed landscapes – and offering unique human-centric experiences for residents and visitors alike. The destination will house six distinctive development districts centered on tailored experiences that blend real with virtual architectural and engineering innovations. All to create a destination like no other on earth.

NEOM is a Saudi City being built in Tabuk Province in Northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is planned to incorporate Smart City technologies and function as a tourist destination. The site is North of the Red Sea, East of Egypt across the Gulf of Aqaba, and South of Jordan.

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)-based the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee are the National Olympic Committee and the National Paralympic Committee representing Saudi Arabia. Until the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Saudi Arabia was one of three countries that had never had a female competitor at the Games.

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) is a governing body of sports in Asia, currently with 45-member National Olympic Committees. The current Acting President is Raja Randhir Singh, substituting Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah. The headquarters of the OCA is located at Kuwait City, Kuwait.

‘Gulf Business’ further stated that the above decision was made after Prince Abdulaziz, who is also the President of SOPC, headed a delegation to the General Assembly meeting of OCA in Cambodia.

Prince Abdulaziz said in a tweet, “With the unlimited support by the Saudi leadership and the Crown Prince to the sports sector, we are proud to announce we have won the bid to host AWG Trojena 2029 as the first country in Western Asia, which will continue to place the kingdom as one of the leading countries in sport.”

In March this year, Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Company Board of Directors, announced the establishment of Trojena.

The project which will be part of the NEOM mega development is set to be ready by 2026. The new year-round tourist destination will consist of a series of facilities such as the ski village, ultra-luxury family and wellness resorts, a wide range of retail stores and restaurants, in addition to sports activities, including a ski slope, water sports and mountain biking, as well as an interactive nature reserve.

Situated in the center of NEOM, 50 km from the Gulf of Aqaba coast, Trojena comprises six districts: Gateway, Discover, Valley, Explore, Relax, and Fun. It will also feature sports, art, music, and cultural festivals.

The Asian Winter Games is an international multisport event. It is held every four years for members of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA).
