Populous to design cricket stadium in Bangladesh Image: Populous & Bangladesh Cricket Board

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has signed a 48-month contract with Populous architecture for construction of the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Purbachal New Town (Bangladesh).

‘THE BUSINESS STANDARD’ stated that Populous presented the draft design at the time of signing the contract. The BCB has not yet said anything about the cost of building the “boat-shaped” stadium. It is understood that the budget will be fixed after the finalization of the design.

Mirpur (Dhaka)-based the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is the governing body of cricket in Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Cricket Board first became an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1977 and on June 26th, 2000, became a Full Member.

Kansas City (US)-based Populous is a global architectural and design practice specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers, as well as the planning and design of major special events.

The 50,000-capacity Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium or ‘The Boat’ is an under-construction cricket stadium located in Sector-I of multibillion dollar Purbachal New Town on the outskirts of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The stadium is a joint venture of the National Sports Council and the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

‘THE BUSINESS STANDARD’ further stated that preliminary talks revolving around the stadium are through, the rest was just a formality which took place on October 12th. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has officially signed a 48-month contract with the Australian company Populous Architecture (Asia Pacific headquarters of Populous) for the construction of the Sheikh Hasina International Cricket Stadium in Purbachal.

The construction of the above venue will be completed within 30 months from the start of work, as per announcement made few days back. The Australian company will keep the stadium under their own supervision for 12 months after completion of the construction work. Populous will sign a contract with a local company in order to build the stadium.

Populous Architecture, which has the experience of building famous stadiums around the world, is going to work in Bangladesh for the first time. Director Andrew James on behalf of Populous and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nizam Uddin Chowdhury on behalf of the BCB signed the 347-page agreement.

After signing the agreement, the BCB CEO told newsmen, “The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has completed the first phase of construction of the Sheikh Hasina Stadium. As per the 347-page contract of the Australian company Populous, the company has been given a deadline of 48 months to complete the work.”

While describing all the works of Populous Architecture including the design, construction and maintenance of the stadium, Chowdhury further stated, “They will work on the design for the first six months. In the next 30 months, the infrastructure of the stadium has to be built. In the final 12 months the loopholes will be plugged.”
