The Argentine Super Cup will be played in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in January 2023 following the country’s football association (AFA) signing a partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), which announced the deal recently.

‘Reuters’ stated that the Super Cup, contested between the winner of Argentina’s Primera División (top division of the Argentine football league system) and the winner of the Argentine Cup, will be played outside Argentina for the first time as part of a four-year agreement.

The Argentine Super Cup is an official national association football cup of Argentina organized by the Argentine Football Association (AFA). The annual football match was played for the first time in 2012, being contested by the reigning champions of Primera División and Copa Argentina (official football cup competition), respectively.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is the governing body of football in Argentina based in Buenos Aires. It organizes the main divisions of the Argentine league system, including domestic cups: Copa Argentina, Copa de la Liga Profesional and the Trofeo de Campeones de la Liga Profesional.

Said Claudio Tapia, President of the AFA, “The partnership will give greater global visibility and create new business opportunities for Argentine clubs and the league.”

‘Reuters’ further stated that the Middle East has become a hot spot for leagues to host Super Cup matches, with Spain’s LaLiga playing the Supercopa de Espana in the Saudi Arabian capital, Riyadh, in January this year.

Arif Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the ADSC, said the agreement meant Abu Dhabi would host “one of the most important matches in the world”.

The Argentine Cup is at the semifinal stage with the top-flight Argentine sports clubs – Club Atlético Boca Juniors, Club Atlético Talleres, Club Atlético Banfield, and Club Atlético Patronato in the Final Four.

Boca are also top of the league standings and if they win the double, the league runners-up will play them in the Super Cup.
