Tampere has been officially named as the Host City of the Group Phase of FIBA EuroBasket 2025 in Finland.

‘FIBA’ stated that the state-of-the-art Tampere Deck Arena (now Nokia Arena) – which opened its doors in 2021 – will be one of the four venues for the Group Phase as Finland co-host the 42nd edition of Europe’s flagship event alongside Cyprus, Latvia and Poland.

Mies (Switzerland)-based the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) – the world governing body for basketball – is an independent association formed by 212 National Basketball Federations throughout the world. It is recognized as the sole competent authority in basketball by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is a non-Governmental sports organization based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is constituted in the form of an association under the Swiss Civil Code.

The EuroBasket 2025 will be the 42nd edition of the EuroBasket championship, the quadrennial international men’s basketball championship organized by FIBA Europe. Like the previous three editions, the tournament will be co-hosted by multiple countries – Latvia, Cyprus, Finland, and Poland. It will be held in the month of September.

The 13,455-capacity Nokia Arena (earlier known as the Tampere Deck Arena) is an indoor arena in Tampere, Finland. It hosts ice hockey games, including the 2022 Men’s World Championship, and large cultural events. Its construction was approved by the City Council of Tampere on May 19th, 2010.

‘FIBA’ further stated that Tampere will host FIBA EuroBasket for a second time having previously been one of the two Cities alongside Helsinki (Finland capital) in 1967, while the Finnish capital also hosted the Group Phase of the tournament on its own in 2017.

Averred Ari Tammivaara, Event Director of the Local Organizing Committee in Finland, “The tournament in Helsinki was a basketball party to be remembered. It’s a great pleasure and joy to have the opportunity to create the same in Tampere. In recent years, Tampere has shown that it’s capable of organizing high-quality international events. The Nokia Arena is conveniently located in the center of the City, built basically on top of the train station, providing great logistical opportunities to set up a basketball festival for the whole of Finland.”

Finland’s senior men’s national team last competed in Tampere during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 European Qualifiers in August 2022 as they defeated Israel in front of 11,554 supporters ahead of becoming the first European team to qualify.

Tampere joins Riga, Latvia and Limassol, Cyprus as Host Cities for the Group Phase of FIBA EuroBasket 2025 with the location for Poland still to be approved by the FIBA Europe Board on March 17th.

FIBA EuroBasket 2025 will mark the fourth edition in a row to be co-hosted by four countries with the Latvian capital Riga set to provide the backdrop for the Final Phase of the tournament.
