The University of Texas announced recently in a social media post – complete with renderings – a new football practice facility located just South of the Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas (US) is “coming soon”.

‘Horns247’ quoted sources as stating that the new football practice facility, which won’t be completed until 2025, will cost roughly $70 million. It will be located just South of the Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium, between the University of Texas’s student recreation center and the Jamail Texas Swimming Center, which is where the Steve Hicks School of Social Work is currently located.

The University of Texas at Austin is a public research university in Austin, Texas (US), and the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. With approximately 41,000 students of Fall 2021, it is also the largest institution in the system.

The 1,00,119-capacity Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium, located in Austin, Texas (US), on the campus of the University of Texas, has been home to the Texas Longhorns football team since 1924. The stadium has delivered a home field advantage with the team’s home record through November 17th, 2018 being 375-117-10.

The Texas Longhorns football program is the intercollegiate team representing the University of Texas at Austin in the sport of American football. The Longhorns compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The team plays its home games at the Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas (US).

The 2,600-capacity Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center is an aquatics facility at the University of Texas at Austin. It is home to the university’s swimming and diving teams, a variety of university-offered swimming and scuba-diving classes, as well as Longhorn Aquatics, a youth program.

Indianapolis (US)-based the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student-athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. The FBS consists of the largest schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association. As of the 2023 season, there are 10 Conferences and 133 schools in FBS.

The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas (US). It consists of 10 full-member universities. It is a member of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for all sports.

‘Horns247’ further stated that the facility will include two outdoor practice fields and a 60-foot-high indoor facility/practice field that will be partially underground, so the roofline is on the same plane as the neighboring 15,000+-capacity Moody Center and indoor basketball/rowing practice facility.

For more than 20 years, the Texas Longhorns football team has conducted football practices at the Frank Denius Fields at the corner of Red River and Dean Keeton, where an outdated indoor practice bubble is located. Players have both walked and ridden buses to workouts depending on the Head Coach (they currently ride buses under Coach Steve Sarkisian).

The University of Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte set out to construct a new practice facility closer to the recent $250 million renovation of the South end of the Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium. The University of Texas President Jay Hartzell was able to commandeer the move.

But it took a domino effect to make it happen, including finding a temporary home for the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, which will move into the current location of the McCombs School of Business in Austin when McCombs moves into its location at the old Dobie Mall on Guadalupe in a few years.

The University of Texas at Austin Steve Hicks School of Social Work is a division of the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas.
