Italian Serie A football team Cagliari Calcio have set its eye on building a new stadium, it was announce earlier in March after the club received a loan for its construction.

The club has been provided the money by the local government and Sardinian financial institution Sfirs to build the 21,000-capacity stadium, which is being designed by Polish architect JSK Architekci.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Cagliari Calcio president Tommaso Giulini, the city’s minister of planning and budget Raffaele Paci and Sfirs president Paul Sestu.

According the media reports Cagliari Calcio plans to entirely replace its current Stadio Sant’Elia by the new football-specific stadium at an estimated cost of €55 million.

Amenities due to be built in the stadium’s vicinity include shops, bars, a gym, a physiotherapy centre, a martial arts studio, football pitches and courts for basketball, tennis and volleyball.

Temporary stadium

However, before work starts on the new stadium, Cagliari Calcio will play its home games at a temporary facility beginning 2017-18 season. The temporary venue will be set up at a cost of €6-7 million (some media reports mentions a figure of €10 million) just beside Stadio Sant’Elia.

The 16,233-seater temporary facility will meet all crucial criteria to hold even Serie A games. It will feature a natural field and floodlights and promises to be a robust structure. The venue will also offer 10 skyboxes, complete press facilities and 4 locker rooms. It should take some 5-6 months to set up.

Once the temporary project is, Stadio Sant’Elia will become obsolete and work on its demolition will begin.

More details of Cagliari Calcio’s unusual plan to have two stadiums will be revealed at Coliseum Summit EUROPE, March 29-30, 2017 at Budapest, Hungary. Continue to follow Coliseum Summit, a global series of stadium and arena business conferences, for latest updates from around the world.
