The thrills and spills of the FIS Freeski & Snowboard Big Air World Cup will be on show at the Wörthersee Stadium in Austria in January 2025.

Klagenfurt Sportpark said the event brings together elite freeskiers and snowboarders from all over the world and promises an unforgettable experience for sports fans and spectators.

The world’s best athletes will compete in daring jumps and impressive tricks. The launch ramp will be at a height of 45m and will therefore protrude almost 15m above the stadium roof.

In addition to the sporting action, visitors can expect a sensational supporting program with international music acts and a large after-show party. The organizers are expecting 150 participants and 40,000 visitors.

Wörthersee Stadium, known as 28 Black Arena for sponsorship reasons, is a multi-purpose stadium located in Klagenfurt, Austria. It is the home ground of Austria Klagenfurt.

The stadium is situated within the Sportpark Klagenfurt campus of several other sports venues. Its name refers to the nearby Wörthersee lake.

Organizer Patrick Riepl presented the event program and praised the excellent cooperation with the partners.

He said, “We presented our idea to the ÖSV in Innsbruck a year ago and everyone was immediately enthusiastic.”

A huge ramp will be built in the 28 Black Arena for a month for the FIS Freeski & Snowboard Big Air World Cup. The 450-ton steel structure will be 45 meters high and will tower 15 meters higher than the stadium itself. A total area of 1,500 square meters will be covered with snow. The budget for the event is around €2.5 million euros.

The main competitions will take place in the freeski discipline on Saturday, January 4th, 2025, and in the snowboard discipline on Sunday, January 5th, 2025.

Klagenfurt Mayor Christian Scheider said, “Imaginative events like this show once again that it was the right decision at the time to preserve the Wörthersee Stadium as a multi-purpose arena. Klagenfurt can offer optimal conditions for events of all kinds. We’re looking forward to the big air in the stadium.”

State Sports Officer, Governor Dr. Peter Kaiser, added, “The Big Air World Cup will cause a stir worldwide. I was impressed by how committed and professionally the organizers worked to implement this mega event right from the start.”

ÖSV President Roswita Stadlober, said, “It is important to us to bring competitions and events into urban areas. With this event we show that we can organize something that goes beyond skiing and is unique.”

Big Air double Olympic champion Anna Gasser added, “I couldn’t believe it! A home World Cup is something very special. I’m happy that I can jump into the Wörthersee Stadium.”
