Go-ahead for Gran Canaria Stadium revamp

The governing body of Gran Canaria has given the green light for plans to redevelop Gran Canaria Stadium in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.

Tinta Amarilla said the plan to upgrade the stadium involves an investment of €101 million and the work will be carried out between 2025-2027.

The capacity of the venue will increase to 44,462 spectators with the redevelopment aimed at boosting the island’s bid to become a venue for the 2030 World Cup to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

The 32,400-capacity Gran Canaria Stadium is a football stadium in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. It is currently used for football matches and is home to the LaLiga team UD Las Palmas. It was opened in 2003.

Improvements to the Gran Canaria Stadium will include a new roof as well as the creation of a new upper ring in the Naciente, Sur stands and Curve.

The first of those stands, which is currently located about 37 meters from the playing field, will be brought closer to about 14 meters from the pitch without the need to modify access to the locker rooms.

With the new stands, the current capacity of 32,418 spectators will rise by more than 37 percent, to 44,462 seats, and the stadium will also sport a new exterior skin, with a futuristic façade.

Two new external areas will also be added to the existing parking spaces in the venue itself and in the Gran Canaria Arena, with more than 46,000 square meters dedicated to vehicles in order to comply with one of the many requirements of FIFA to host soccer showcases.

The Fondos del Segura Street, parallel to the South Stand, will also be modified and new roads and a bike lane will be built.

The president of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Antonio Morales, said, “Today we have taken a very important step to reaffirm our candidacy for the 2030 World Cup.

“In 2027 Gran Canaria will have a leading, avant-garde stadium, which will be put at the service not only of the sports community, but also of the entire Gran Canaria society. It will also be a huge attraction for other types of activities.”

Councillor for Sports of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Aridany Romero, added, “The Island Government is firmly committed to this candidacy, which will be important not only on a sporting level, but also for the island’s businesses and economy. It is a milestone that after 21 years the Gran Canaria Stadium can be completed.

“The entire corporation has voted in favor and that is a very important element to give solidity and maturity to the candidacy of the Gran Canaria Stadium as the venue for the final phase of the 2030 World Cup. All that remained was to secure the financial resources and today they have been guaranteed.”
