MVSA Architects has unveiled renderings of the much-anticipated redevelopment of the Galgenwaard Stadium and its surrounding area in Utrecht in the Netherlands.

MVSA Architects has been commissioned to design four towers for the stadium’s corners. These towers will breathe new life to the stadium and add ground-breaking new functionality: residential living.

This pioneering intervention will position Galgenwaard as the first stadium globally to incorporate residential units on this significant scale.

MVSA said the project will reintroduce the iconic stadium and transform the area into a new hub of urban life and sustainability.

MVSA is teaming up with Jongerius Invest BV, Vastgoed and the Municipality of Utrecht, to launch a new chapter for the Galgenwaard area.

Galgenwaard Stadium is a football stadium in Utrecht, Netherlands. It has been the home of F.C. Utrecht since 1970. The stadium, which underwent a renovation starting at the beginning of the 21st century, has a capacity of 23,750 spectators.

F.C. Utrecht is a Dutch professional football club based in Utrecht. The club competes in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football.

Urban living

As the fastest-growing city in the Netherlands, Utrecht faces increasing demand for housing, amenities, employment, green spaces, and sustainable energy.

The Galgenwaard project is an ambitious response to these needs, transforming a previously isolated location into a modern, cohesive, and environmentally sustainable metropolitan area at Utrecht’s edge.

Following the recent completion of Wonderwoods in the city’s urban center, the Galgenwaard transformation reinforces MVSA’s commitment to making Utrecht greener, more sustainable, and future-proof.

The Galgenwaard redevelopment will transform the area into a vibrant green urban hub that harmoniously combines sports, health, work, and living.

What is now a concrete dominated landscape, restricted to traffic and parking will become a green and accessible public space for leisure and social engagement.

Designed to prioritize city and nature integration, the project is enhanced by lush vertical greenery on the towers and recreational spaces by the riverside. The redevelopment of Galgenwaard will make space for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, and rich native flora and fauna.

MVSA said, “Galgenwaard Stadium is set to become the world’s first stadium to offer residential units within its structure on this scale.

“This innovative approach will maintain the commercial and leisure spaces while introducing a whole new dimension—living spaces with unparalleled views. New commercial spaces will be added in each corner of the stadium, with the four new towers housing office and residential units.”

Residents of these new towers will enjoy a unique vantage point, with sweeping views of Utrecht on one side and exclusive views of the stadium field on the other – delivering a ‘skybox’ experience from the comfort of their homes.
