The Norwegian telecoms operator and utility Lyse recently stated that the Norwegian professional football club Viking Stavanger’s home field – the Viking Stadion in Stavanger, Norway – is changing its name to Lyse Arena continuing its sponsorship dating back more than 30 years.

‘telecompaper’ stated that the football stadium will now bear the Lyse Logo which will appear on the players’ shirts too. The deal runs until 2029 and also covers the delivery by Lyse of services such as district heating, electricity, mobile services from its Ice arm (mobile arm of Lyse), and Internet and TV from Altibox (a Norwegian telecommunications company that provides fiber-based broadband, TV and telephony services. It is a subsidiary of the Lyse Group).

Stavanger (Norway)-based Lyse is a Norwegian energy and telecommunications group established in 1999 but with over 100 years of hydropower history. Its value creation is returned to the society. With its hydropower heritage Lyse is one of Norway’s largest producers of renewable hydropower.

The Viking FK, commonly known as the Viking or Viking Stavanger internationally, is a Norwegian professional football club from the City of Stavanger (Norway). The club was founded in 1899. It is one of the most successful clubs in Norwegian football having won 8 Norwegian top division titles. It plays in the Eliteserien, the top of the Norwegian football league system.

The 15,900-capacity Viking Stadion (currently known as the Lyse Arena for sponsorship reasons) is a football stadium in Stavanger, Norway. It was inaugurated in May 2004 and cost 160 million NOK (€20 million) to build. It serves as the residence of the Viking Stavanger.

‘telecompaper’ further stated that nationally Lyse is now a leader in fiber-based broadband and the third largest provider of mobile services in Norway – under their brands Altibox and Ice.

The above stadium is used by the women’s and men’s clubs alike as well as by the youth and the grassroots players. It also hosts major concerts, meetings and conferences. The new agreement with Lyse particularly targets schemes for women such as the Jenteloeftet project for the long-term development of girls’ grassroots football.

The Viking FK Kvinner (the women’s football team of the Viking Stavanger) plays in the 1. divisjon, the second-highest level of the Norwegian football league system.
