Rome City Council gives approval for new stadium Image: AS Roma

The Rome City Council recently approved a resolution on the planned new stadium for the Serie A team – AS Roma – saying the facility, which will move the ‘Giallorossi’ away from their home digs – the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy – will seat 60,000 spectators.

‘ansa.it’ stated that the measure will now be examined by the relevant committees and will be submitted to the Capitoline Assembly for a final vote to confirm the project’s public interest.

The City Council of Rome or the Capitoline Assembly is the top tier legislative body of Rome, Italy. It consists of the directly elected Mayor of Rome and an elected 48-member Assembly. It represents a legislative body which can also control the Mayor’s policy guidelines and be able to enforce their resignation by a motion of no-confidence.

The AS Roma is a professional football club based in Rome, Italy. Founded by a merger in 1927, Roma has participated in the top tier of Italian football for all of its existence except for the 1951-1952 seasons.

The Stadio Olimpico, colloquially known as the l’Olimpico (The Olympic), is an Italian multipurpose sports venue located in Rome (Italy). Seating over 70,000 spectators it is the largest sports facility in Rome and the second-largest in Italy after Milan’s 80,018-capacity San Siro Stadium.

‘ansa.it’ further stated that the stadium will have a capacity of 60,605 with a 23,000-seat stand among the largest in Europe.

The total investment by the AS Roma amounts to €1,047.79 million.

The capital’s other club – the Serie A team SS Lazio – is also planning to abandon the Stadio Olimpico and recently presented their project to renovate Rome’s 24,973-capacity Stadio Flaminio and make it the new home of the Serie A club.

The complex has fallen into a state of disrepair after the Italian national rugby team stopped using it for its Six Nations games following the 2011 tournament and moved to the larger Olimpico.

The Six Nations Championship (known as the Six Nations) is an annual international rugby union competition by the Men’s teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales.
