Deportivo de la Coruña to renovate its stadium Image: Deportivo de la Coruña

The Mayor of A Coruña (City and Municipality in Galicia, Spain), Inés Rey, and the President of the Segunda División team RC Deportivo, Juan Carlos Escotet Rodríguez, announced recently that an agreement between the City Council and the majority shareholders of RC Deportivo (Rodríguez being the majority shareholder) has been reached to jointly promote the comprehensive modernization of the Riazor Sports Complex which includes the Municipal stadium, the Sports Palace, the Marathon Tower, and the set of sports infrastructures skirting the Riazor Sports Complex.

‘RCDEPORTIVO’ stated that the above agreement marks the beginning of a new stage of institutional understanding and public-private cooperation with the aim of strengthening the role of sport as a social, economic and promotional engine for the City.

The Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña, commonly known as the Deportivo La Coruña or simply Depor, is a Spanish professional football club based in the City of A Coruña, Galicia (Spain) that competes in the Segunda División, the second tier of the Spanish football league system.

The 32,490-capacity Estadio Municipal de Riazor, also referred to as the Estadio Abanca-Riazor for sponsorship reasons, is an all-seater stadium in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain, which is the home stadium of the Deportivo de La Coruña.

Mayor Rey emphasized that the above decision reflects a strategic vision for the City – “We are forging an alliance with the best interests of A Coruña, Deportivo and the future of sports in our City in mind. This project will improve our sports infrastructure and is designed for the benefit of the club, its fans and all the citizens.”

For his part, the President of RC Deportivo, Juan Carlos Escotet Rodríguez, stressed that the initiative was born with a long-term vocation and with a vision that transcends the sporting use of the venue itself – “The project we have started isn’t just about meeting the external or temporary requirements, it’s about evolving the stadium and its surroundings to fully integrate them into the City’s daily life. We want a vibrant space 365 days a year capable of generating sporting, social and cultural activities that adds value to A Coruña and all its residents.”

The project will also involve the Provincial Council which will collaborate in the development of the facilities in accordance with the sporting and social relevance that the Riazor complex represents for the City and for Galicia.

In this context, Mayor Rey explained that the above agreement is the result of a constructive dialog between the institutions aimed at finding the best solution keeping the City’s best interests in mind – “As a result of this dialog we made a responsible decision: To withdraw our bid for the World Cup and concentrate our efforts on a project of our own for A Coruña.”

The 2030 FIFA World Cup™ will be the 24th FIFA World Cup™, a quadrennial international football tournament contested by the Men’s national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain and it would be the first across the Mediterranean Sea. In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first FIFA World Cup™ in 1930 a special match and centennial celebration will be held at the 60,235-capacity Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay – the host stadium of the 1930 Final as well as one match each will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Asunción, Paraguay.

‘RCDEPORTIVO’ further stated that likewise, the President of RC Deportivo Rodríguez reiterated the commitment of the majority shareholders to the growth of the club and to the development of the City – “As the majority shareholders we want to reaffirm our firm and long-term commitment to investing in RC Deportivo and developing the Riazor Complex. We see our presence in A Coruña as a commitment to the City’s growth. The goal is to consolidate a solid institution that acts as a driving force for development and projects the name of A Coruña with rigor and professionalism, both within and beyond our borders.”

With the above agreement the City Council and the RC Deportivo will establish a stable framework for collaboration that will allow progress in improving the City’s sports infrastructure and will consolidate the role of sport as one of A Coruña’s greatest assets.
