Tokyo plans Vegas version of The Sphere

The Japan-based financial business company – SBI Holdings – is exploring plans to build a large-scale immersive arena in Tokyo (Japan) aiming to replicate the Sphere in Las Vegas (US) as part of a broader push by the group into media and entertainment.

‘the japan times’ stated that at a media briefing recently the Tokyo-based financial group said it has entered into negotiations with the US company Madison Square Garden (MSG) Entertainment to develop a Japan version of the spherical arena known for its wraparound light emitting diode (LED) dome and immersive visual experiences.

The 20,000-capacity Sphere (also known as Sphere at the Venetian Resort or the Las Vegas Sphere) is a music and entertainment arena in Paradise, Nevada, United States, East of the Las Vegas Strip.

The Las Vegas Strip is a stretch of the Las Vegas Boulevard in Clark County, Nevada (US) that is known for its concentration of resort hotels and casinos. The Strip, as it is known, is about 4.2 mi (6.8 km) long and is immediately South of the Las Vegas city limits in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester.

The Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corporation (also known as the MSG Entertainment) is an American entertainment holding company based in New York City. It is controlled by the family of the Late Charles Dolan.

‘the japan times’ further stated that the SBI is considering the Odaiba waterfront district as a potential site for the project with the total construction costs currently estimated at about ¥350 billion ($2.2 billion) though the Chairman and President of SBI Holdings Yoshitaka Kitao indicated the final price could rise closer to ¥500 billion depending on the global conditions and the construction costs.

Kitao told reporters at the briefing, “This is a project we are determined to pursue no matter what.”

The proposed arena would be capable of accommodating around 20,000 people and would feature a fully enclosed spherical structure covered in 360-degree LED displays. The venue would host a mix of immersive film-style experiences and live concerts.

The executives said the facility could serve as a flagship for the Government’s ‘Cool Japan’ tourism promotion strategy leveraging the country’s globally popular intellectual property – including anime, gaming and music – by providing a next-generation platform for large-scale experiential content.

The SBI said discussions with the MSG Entertainment have already begun and that materials outlining the proposal have been shared with the US company. Talks are expected to progress further in the coming months.

The venue is expected to target the younger audiences and the inbound tourists with the executives emphasizing its potential to draw the visitors from overseas on a sustained basis.

The SBI executives also said the group intends to link the entertainment assets with the financial services – including digital securities and tokenization – to create new revenue streams and investment opportunities.

The group also highlighted the venue’s potential to generate continuous revenue through daily programming rather than the one-off events.

While the Sphere project remains at an early stage the executives stressed its strategic importance for the company positioning it as a cornerstone of SBI’s expansion beyond financial services into entertainment and digital content.
