Poland will host the European Athletics Championships for the first time and the 2028 edition of the showpiece event will take place at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów from June 3rd-8th.

Poland is the sixth most successful nation at the European Athletics Championships, which were first held in 1934, with 59 gold medals and 185 medals in total.

‘Reuters’ stated that the above announcement was made by the European Athletics recently during the European Athletics Council meeting in Birmingham (UK), host of this year’s championships in August.

The European Athletics Championships is a biennial athletics event organized by the European Athletic Association and is recognized as the elite continental outdoor athletics championships for Europe.

The European Athletic Association is the governing body for athletics in Europe. It is one of the six Area Associations of the world’s athletics governing body World Athletics. The European Athletics has 51 members and is headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Monaco-based the World Athletics (WA), formerly known as the International Amateur Athletic Federation and the International Association of Athletics Federations and formerly abbreviated as the IAAF, is the international governing body for the sport of athletics covering track and field, cross country running, road running, race walking, mountain running, and ultra running.

The Silesian Stadium is a sport stadium located on the premises of the Silesian Park in Chorzów, Poland. The stadium has a fully covered capacity of 54,378 following refurbishment completed in October 2017.

‘Reuters’ further stated that the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów – which hosts the annual Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, part of the Diamond League – will be hosting the athletics showpiece from June 3rd-8th, one month before the Olympic Games in Los Angeles (US).

The Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, also known as the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, is an annual track and field event held at the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, Poland, in summer.

The Diamond League is an annual series of elite track and field athletic competitions comprising 15 invitational athletics meetings. The series sits in the top tier of the World Athletics one-day meet competitions.

The 2028 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad and commonly known as the Los Angeles 2028 or LA28, is an upcoming international multisport event scheduled to take place from July 14th-30th, 2028 in the United States. Los Angeles will be the host city with various events also scheduled to be held at other cities spread across the Greater Los Angeles area plus two subsites in Oklahoma City.

European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinov said in a statement, “This will be the fourth time the European Athletics Championships will take place in the same year as the Olympic Games. And it is not an exaggeration to say that Silesia 2028 will provide us with a glimpse into the future.”
