The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) (Spain) recently presented this season’s Supercopa at an event in Istanbul (Türkiye).

Four-team Tournament

‘english.news.cn’ stated that the four-team tournament will see the LaLiga champion FC Barcelona face their peer team Atlético Madrid in the first Semifinal on February 2nd, 2027, while the Copa del Rey winner Real Sociedad meets Real Madrid CF the following day. The Final will be played on February 6th, 2027.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is the governing body of football in Spain. Founded on September 29th, 1913, it is based in La Ciudad del Fútbol of Las Rozas, a Municipality near Madrid (Spain).

The Supercopa de España (‘Super Cup of Spain’), also referred to as the Spanish Super Cup, is a Super Cup tournament in Spanish football. Founded in 1982 as a two-team competition the current version has been contested since 2020 by four teams: The Winners and Runners-Up of the Copa del Rey (the main annual knockout football competition in Spanish Men’s soccer) and the LaLiga (the top professional Men’s football division in the Spanish football league system).

Istanbul Venues

‘english.news.cn’ further stated that unlike the recent editions the Supercopa will be staged across three venues in Istanbul: The FC Barcelona against the Atlético Madrid at the Süper Lig (the top division of Turkish football) team Fenerbahçe S.K. home ground – the 47,911-seat Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, the second Semifinal at the Süper Lig team Beşiktaş J.K. residence – the 42,000-seat Vodafone Park – and the Final at the Süper Lig team Galatasaray S.K. home venue – the 53,387-seat Ali Sami Yen Stadium.

‘Three Great Stadiums’

Remarked Rafael Louzan, President, RFEF, “There will be three great matches in three great stadiums capable of hosting a total of over 150,000 spectators. Istanbul has hosted the Champions League Finals in 2005 and 2023 as well as the 2026 Europa League Final. It boasts the necessary infrastructure, the stadiums and a passionate fanbase. We are certain that Istanbul will fully embrace the Super Cup.”

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League, commonly known as the Champions League, is an annual club football competition organized by the UEFA that is contested by the top-division European clubs.

The UEFA Europa League (UEL), known simply as the Europa League, is an annual club football competition organized since 1971 by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the eligible European clubs.

Nyon (Switzerland)-based the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is the governing body of football in Europe and one of FIFA’s six continental confederations for association football consisting of 55 national associations.

The RFEF said Istanbul was chosen from seven candidate cities. Saudi Arabia, which had hosted the Supercopa since 2020 except for 2021, was unavailable this year as it will stage the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in early 2027.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)-based the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) is the governing body of association football, beach soccer and futsal in most countries and territories in Asia. It is one of the six continental confederations under FIFA and is responsible for organizing the international competitions for the national teams and the clubs within its jurisdiction.

The 2027 AFC Asian Cup will be the 19th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial international Men’s football championship of Asia organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The tournament will involve 24 national teams after the expansion in 2019. It will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 7th-February 5th, 2027.

‘Extraordinary Occasion’

Louzan said the event would be “an extraordinary occasion that will also boost the city’s tourism and international profile”.
