Oakland Athletics first designs for Vegas ballpark Image: Major League Baseball and Oakland Athletics

The Major League Baseball (MLB) team Oakland Athletics – often referred to as the Oakland A’s – unveiled the first renderings for their proposed new ballpark in Las Vegas (US) on May 26th.

‘Major League Baseball’ stated that the project calls for a 30,000-seat ballpark on the nine-acre Tropicana site, which is located on the South end of the Las Vegas Strip. The stadium would feature a partially retractable roof with a playing surface that will allow for the outfield to open to the corner of Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard for a view of the Strip.

The Oakland Athletics are an American professional baseball team based in Oakland, California, US. The Athletics compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the American League West division. The team plays its home games at the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum.

The 63,000-capacity Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum is a stadium in Oakland, California. It is part of the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Complex with the adjacent Oakland Arena, near Interstate 880. The Coliseum is the home ballpark of Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics.

The ‘A’s new venue plans included creating a mixed-use development with up to 3,000 residential units, up to 1.5 million square feet of offices and up to 270,000 square feet of retail uses. The proposed development at the Port of Oakland’s Howard Terminal included plans for a $12 billion mixed-use project built around a $1 billion, 30,000-seat waterfront ballpark.

However, with a lot of feet-dragging on the Oakland plan, the team decided to move to Las Vegas. The team has a lease agreement to play at the aging Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum through 2024.

The Tropicana Las Vegas is a casino hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, US. It is owned and operated by Bally’s Corporation, on land leased from the Gaming and Leisure Properties. It offers 1,467 rooms, a 50,000-square-foot (4,600 m2) gaming floor and 72,000 sq ft (6,700 m2) of convention and exhibit space.

‘Major League Baseball’ further stated that in addition to ‘A’s’ games, the state-of-the-art venue will be a hub for sports, entertainment and community engagement by hosting concerts and other events.

‘A’s team President Dave Kaval said in a statement, “We are excited to share our vision for the ‘A’s’ potential new home. As our first conceptual design, we will continue to refine the look and feel of the ballpark over the next year. We hope our project goes beyond a traditional ballpark and serves as a catalyst for community development and engagement. It follows in the footsteps and success of the professional sports teams that come before us, in creating union jobs, stimulating economic growth and fostering investments in the community. Thanks to the vision of Bally’s and the Gaming and Leisure Properties, Inc. (GLPI), we have the opportunity to bring baseball to one of the most energetic locations in Las Vegas. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Nevada Governor, Joe Lombardo, legislative leaders, the Clark County Commissioners and the Southern Nevada communities as we move forward with plans on our new home.”

The Bally’s Corporation is a gaming, betting and interactive entertainment company headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island (US). It owns and operates 15 casinos across 10 States, a horse track in Colorado and online sports betting operations in 14 States.

The Gaming and Leisure Properties, Inc. is a real estate investment trust specializing in casino properties, based in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. It was formed in November 2013 as a corporate spin-off from the Penn National Gaming. The company owns 57 casino properties, all of which are leased to other companies.

The design of the ballpark is being handled by Brad Schrock of Schrock KC Architecture and pays homage to the rich history of the ‘A’s’ as well as the unique spirit of Las Vegas. The plan will feature innovative architecture, sustainability and environmental consciousness, and modern amenities that focus on the peak of excellence in fan experience.

Stated Schrock, “From the minute we stepped onto the Tropicana site nearly two years ago, it was immediately obvious what a fantastic fit it would be for a new ‘A’s’ ballpark in Las Vegas. The natural orientation of the ballpark creates not only some of the best views and connection to the Las Vegas skyline from the seating bowl, but also opens up the ballpark to the corner in a way that creates opportunities for an amazing energetic public space with open and expansive views into the ballpark.”

With the ‘A’s’ and the State of Nevada having come to a tentative agreement on public financing for the new ballpark, the next step in the process is for the Bill to formally be introduced to the Nevada Legislature, which is likely to happen at the earliest.

New York (US)-based Major League Baseball (MLB) is a professional baseball organization. One of the major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada, MLB comprises 30 teams, divided equally between the National League and the American League, with 29 in the United States and 1 in Canada.
