The professional soccer team based at Colorado in US – Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC – will get an 8,000-capacity stadium which is expected to go on stream in 2021.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC is a professional soccer team based in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Founded in 2014, the team is a member of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) Championship, the second tier of the American soccer pyramid.

The USL Championship is a professional men’s soccer league in the United States that began its inaugural season in 2011. The USL is sanctioned by the United States Soccer Federation as a Division II Professional League since 2017, placing it under Major League Soccer (MLS) in the hierarchy.

The downtown venue will be located at the CityGate property bordered by Cimarron to the North, Moreno to the South, Sierra Madre to the West and Sahwatch to the East. The facility will be a mixed use development which will come furnished with a rectangular field of play and will serve as the permanent home of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. The stadium is anticipated to enjoy 8,000 spectator seats, expandable to 15,000 for sporting events, and will be a multipurpose facility which can accommodate a wide variety of sporting and entertainment events. The stadium will be constructed together with a mixed-use residential and commercial development in tune with Weidner Apartment Homes which provides real estate services. Weidner will receive naming rights to the stadium. The combined project price tag is estimated at $60 million.

The fourth City for Champions project will comprise two separate facilities. The outdoor downtown stadium will serve as the permanent home arena of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks while the event center will serve as the new home of the Colorado College ice hockey team. The facilities will be futuristic, multipurpose venues designed to host professional, Olympic and amateur sporting fixtures as well as entertainment and cultural events. Partnering and providing private financial funding in the venture are Colorado College, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks and Weidner Apartment Homes.

Indoor events center

The indoor events center, which will go by the name Edward J Robson Arena, will boast 3,000 permanent seats and capabilities to host ice-based and other sports, as well as entertainment events. The planned facility, which will have less than half the seats of the Broadmoor World Arena, will be the size of arenas boasted by colleges and varsities that have similar numbers of students and Division 1 hockey programs. The arena will be built on the block bordered by Nevada Avenue, Cache La Poudre, Tejon and Dale Streets, allowing the Colorado College Tiger’s men’s ice hockey team to play games on campus for the first time since the program started in 1938.

The Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado is an 8,000 seat multipurpose arena and entertainment venue. The arena opened in 1998. In addition to the main arena, the adjacent Ice Hall contains two practice rinks, one National Hockey League (NHL)-sized and one Olympic-sized.
