Topped with glitz by eminent architecture firm Populous and futuristic renovations by Spanish firm MolcaWorld, the spectacular Mexican Azteca Stadium is undergoing revamp work in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup™ finals. It is readying to give fans and players an uber-cool experience.

The Estadio Azteca is a multipurpose stadium located in Mexico City. It is the official home of football club Club América, and the Mexico national football team. The stadium sits at an altitude of 2,200 m above sea level. With an official capacity of 87,523, it is the largest stadium in Mexico.

The revered football stadium is the only stadium to have hosted four FIFA tournaments – the World Cup, the U-20 World Cup, the U-17 World Cup and the Confederations Cup.

For the global soccer spectacle in 2026, it will share venue space with Canada and America hosting 10 matches in the iconic arena, home of Club América, Atlante F.C., Club Universidad Nacional, Atlético Español F.C., Cruz Azul, and NFL International Series.

The new Populous-designed dugout, the defined zone earmarked for coaches, other coaching personnel and players, and the canopy were relocated from the West side of the pitch to the East to better position the new cameras within the bowl.

The design makes sure that there is zero obstruction for spectators sitting directly behind the dugout by placing the new players’ bench partly beneath the pitch level.

Reflecting the high octane game of soccer, the new dugout canopy is made in the pentagonal and hexagonal pattern of the original tessellation on the Telstar and Azteca soccer balls designed and used during the 1970 and 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico.

The air-filled pillows double up to protect players and officials from the elements while providing spectators and television cameras a clear view of the action through the transparent material.

“The new dugout and canopy feature luxury padded car-style sports chairs, data and power points throughout, and programable LED lighting within the canopy structure that illuminates to celebrate any goal or occasion,” Tim Reeves, Senior Associate at Populous commented.

“It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience for fans and players alike,” Reeves added.

On the other hand, MolcaWorld’s agreement with the managers of Azteca is to undertake the “integral revitalization” of the field.

The Valencia, Spain-headquartered MolcaWorld which specializes in branding and visual communication projects for companies and sports organizations has a greater task cut out for it.

To be undertaken in a multiphased manner as per its stylebook, Molca world will reconfigure the facades, the stands, the changing rooms, the press rooms or the VIP boxes, among other interior areas of the stadium.

With the goal of showcasing the star stadium in the best possible condition, President of the Mexican Football Federation, Yon de Luisa, announced important changes in the property, so that it sports grandeur look for the FIFA showpiece.

“The stadiums will undergo adjustments, there will be more adjustments in the Azteca Stadium than in the Rayados Stadium, just because it was built 50 years later,” Luisa asserted.

“Fortunately, these different remodeling plans have been working with the people of FIFA, we can see that the stadium (Azteca) changed its entire structure of lights. Surely there will be remodeling changes in all VIP areas, all sections of boxes and others, locker room issues, remember that the changing rooms at the Azteca Stadium are underground and construction is not easy, but the people at the stadium already have an improvement plan for the locker rooms. We are going to establish the big changes between 2023 and 2024,” added the President of the Mexican Football Federation.
