The Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium in Ciudad de los Deportes, Mexico City (Mexico) which was closed by the local authorities on November 2nd due to safety regulation violations reopened on November 7th with new regulations such as an increase in security personnel at both the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium and the Plaza de Toros, encouraging the use of public transport to reach the venues and the prohibition on holding two events on the same day.

‘EL DICTAMEN’ stated that the above facility was closed after the authorities detected safety violations that could potentially endanger the health and lives of the fans. Although specific reasons have not been disclosed, the closure is due to a lack of required safety certifications and issues with the stadium’s infrastructure.

It is an aging structure with poor parking facilities and complex traffic patterns.

The Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium is a 34,253-seat multipurpose stadium located in Ciudad de los Deportes, Mexico City (Mexico). The facility is used for association football matches and for American football as well. It is the current home stadium of football clubs Club América (a professional football club based in Mexico City which competes in the Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football), the Atlante F.C. (a professional football club based in Mexico City which plays in the Liga de Expansión MX, the second level division in the Mexican football league system) and Cruz Azul (a professional football club based in Mexico City which competes in the Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football).

The Plaza de Toros situated in Mexico City (Mexico) is the world’s largest bullring. This 41,262-seat facility is usually dedicated to bullfighting but many boxing matches have been held here as well. It sits next to the Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium.

‘EL DICTAMEN’ quoted Santiago Taboada, the PAN (National Action Party) Mayor of Benito Juárez (Municipality in Mexico), as stating, “I want to declare that the above arena has corrected all safety issues and I will continue to keep a hawk eye to ensure that the fans who come to the stadium enjoy the highest standards of safety as well as the people living close by to the stadium are safe and secure.”

The primary reason for the closure of the venue was the discovery of significant safety violations within the stadium not meeting necessary standards for large gatherings.

The closure disrupted the schedules of the three teams that play at the stadium: Club América, Atlante and Cruz Azul.

It is also being reported that the stadium was illicitly hosting a Cruz Azul game at the same time that an event was being staged at the adjacent bullring which holds 41,000 spectators.

The venue operators were charged with contravening civil protection measures which were imposed to minimize the impact on the local residents.

The Ciudad de los Deportes Stadium has been reopened with a series of new conditions laid down to enhance the safety quotient and events cannot be held at both the venues simultaneously and fireworks have been banned inside Cruz Azul’s home. And after the end of the events the cleaning operations will be carried out in one of the two structures and the whole exercise will be conducted by the Mayor’s Office.
