Italy Spezia Calcio to transform stadium Image: Spezia Calcio

The Serie A club Spezia Calcio (Italy) has announced that its owner Robert Platek and his family, just three months after buying the club, has decided to bring about a 360 degree change in the sports scenario of the sports City of Italy – La Spezia.

‘Spezia Calcio’ stated that the Platek family aims to deliver a state-of-the-art stadium to Spezia Calcio and the City, with an investment that will go around to 15 million euros. And all this will be made possible due to the perfect synergy among the Platek family, the Mayor of La Spezia, Pierluigi Peracchini, the local authorities, and competent bodies.

Spezia Calcio is a professional football club based in La Spezia, Liguria, Italy. In 2020-2021, they started playing in Serie A (top of the Italian football league system) for the first time in their history, after promotion to the top tier for the first time via play-offs in the 2019-2020 seasons. Spezia hosts matches at the 10,336-capacity Stadio Alberto Picco.

Stadio Alberto Picco is the main football stadium in La Spezia, Italy. Since 1919, it is the home ground of Spezia Calcio 1906. The stadium holds 10,336 spectators.

The American investor Robert Platek and his family who are from New York took over the reins of the club from the Italian entrepreneur Gabriele Volpi in February 2021.

‘Spezia Calcio’ further stated that in consonance with the Municipality of La Spezia, the Club of via Melara has entrusted the renovation work of the Alberto Picco Stadium to the GAU Arena company of architect Gino Zavanella whose forte lies in designing futuristic sport structures with the sustainability quotient kept high.

The entire development will take three years’ time and the first phase will see the design and renovation of the ‘Curva Piscina’, while the last two phases will begin at the end of the 2021-2022 championship when the entire focus of the renovation project will move to the grandstand of the Viale Fieschi plant.

The rehabilitated Alberto Picco Stadium will meet all the infrastructural requirements that are needed of a Serie A championship and will provide a riveting and exalted experience to fans.
