The Leichhardt Oval Stadium in Sydney (Australia) is set for its biggest transformation in decades with the Minns Labor Government approving a major redevelopment that will secure the future of one of Sydney’s great suburban sporting venues.

Construction is expected to kick off following the 2026 NRL season with the upgraded ground on track for completion ahead of the 2028 season kick off.

Joint Funding

‘NSW GOVERNMENT’ stated that the project is jointly funded with $20 million from the Albanese Labor Government, $10 million from the Minns Labor Government and $10 million from the Inner West Council.

The 20,000-seat Leichhardt Oval is a stadium located in the Sydney suburb of Lilyfield (Australia). It is primarily used for rugby league and soccer.

‘Eighth Wonder of the World’

A rugby league stronghold since the 1930s and home of the National Rugby League (NRL) team Wests Tigers the Leichhardt Oval, known by the locals as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’, will be transformed with the new grandstands, the modern facilities and the improved amenity for the players and the fans while continuing to serve as a hub for grassroots sport in Sydney’s Inner West.

Sydney (Australia)-based the National Rugby League (NRL) (also known as the NRL Telstra Premiership for sponsorship reasons) is a professional rugby league competition in Oceania which is currently contested by 17 teams from New South Wales (NSW), Queensland, Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and New Zealand.

In the Mix

‘NSW GOVERNMENT’ further stated that the redevelopment, delivered by the Inner West Council will keep the Leichhardt Oval Stadium firmly in the mix as a venue for the Men’s and Women’s NRL and the A-League fixtures (the top-tier professional association football [soccer] league in Australia and New Zealand) while giving the local clubs, the pathways programs and the next generation of athletes a facility to match their ambition.

The key upgrades include:

  • Renovation of the historic Western grandstand with new seating;
  • The modern hospitality and media facilities;
  • Four NRL-compliant female-friendly change rooms;
  • A new Northern grandstand; and
  • Replacement of seating in the lower Bowl.

The project is expected to generate approximately 130 construction jobs.

Community Sport

Averred Anthony Albanese, Prime Minister of Australia, “This is exactly the kind of investment that keeps community sport strong. The Leichhardt Oval has been part of the fabric of Sydney’s Inner West for generations and this funding means it stays that way for generations to come.”

Rich History

Added Anika Wells, Federal Minister for Sport, “The Leichardt Oval Stadium has a rich history and is full of memories for so many people. This investment secures the future of Leichardt Oval and makes it a better place for everyone, from the grassroots to the elite level of men’s and women’s sport.”

Storied Ground

Pointed Paul Scully, NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, “We listened to what people told us during the community exhibition and the result is a design that upgrades the facilities but keeps the fans close to the action which is always the best way to watch footy. This approval means work can kick off to deliver a facility that respects the history of this ground, scoring points for the fans and the players alike with modernized facilities.”

Community Asset

Stated Steve Kamper, NSW Minister for Sport, “We’re backing the Leichhardt Oval Stadium so it can continue to be one of Australia’s great suburban sporting grounds. From packed hill crowds to unforgettable moments the Leichhardt Oval Stadium has earned its place in the hearts of the fans but it’s also a thriving community asset and a venue where women’s and grassroot sport continue to flourish.”

Popular Ground

Remarked Tanya Plibersek, Federal Member for Sydney, “The Leichhardt Oval Stadium is one of Sydney’s most loved sporting grounds and these upgrades will make sure it continues to be for years to come. This project that means so much to the people of the Inner West. I am excited to see work kick off soon.”

‘Matches Passion’

Enthused Jo Haylen, State Member for Summer Hill, “This is a huge win for the Inner West. The local clubs, the junior athletes and the Tigers fans have waited a long time for a ground that matches their passion and now they are getting it.”

‘Memorable Day’

Maintained Darcy Byrne, Inner West Mayor, “The above development is an important and memorable day for the Inner West following the NSW Government’s formal approval of the Leichhardt Oval renovation. Better than a red-letter day, this is a black-and-gold day for the West Tigers fans – their spiritual home has been saved. The Oval renovation is bigger than the Tigers and after a long community fight we can ensure the venue will be safe with better seating and facilities for all the sports including the major women’s sporting events.”
