The Serie A team Genoa CFC and the Serie B team UC Sampdoria have both sent out a joint statement recently stating that they have created a new 50-50 partnership entity named Genova Stadium Srl with the intention of launching a joint bid to purchase their home field – the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy – from the local authorities.

‘Football Italia’ stated that both Genoa and Sampdoria play their home games at the above stadium and have been sharing the ground since the mid-1940s.

The Genoa Cricket and Football Club is an Italian professional football club based in Genoa, Liguria (Italy). The team competes in Serie A, the top division of the Italian football league system.

The Unione Calcio Sampdoria, commonly referred to as Sampdoria, is an Italian professional football club based in Genoa, Liguria (Italy). They compete in Serie B, the second division of the Italian football league system.

The 36,599-capacity Luigi Ferraris Stadium, also known as the Marassi from the name of the neighborhood in which it is located, is a multiuse stadium in Genoa, Italy. The home of the Genoa CFC and the UC Sampdoria football clubs, it opened in 1911 and is the oldest stadium still in use for football and holding other sporting events in Italy.

‘Football Italia’ further stated that the above stadium, currently the oldest professional football ground still in use in Italy, is owned by the City of Genoa rather than by either of the two clubs who use it.

Genoa and Sampdoria have informed their respective supporters that their “objective” is to buy the stadium from the local Council.

Owning the stadium would provide long-term security to both the teams and will also provide an opportunity to use the ground for other commercial events which would keep the Luigi Ferraris Stadium wheels well-oiled.
