Oulunkylä Sports Park planned in Helsinki Image: Aki Rask & City of Helsinki

The City of Helsinki (capital of Finland) is planning to build a new stadium within the precincts of the Oulunkylä Sports Park.

‘Daily Finland’ stated that the stadium will be used for staging football games and other events.

The City Sports Services assessed that Helsinki will require one new football stadium in the coming years in addition to the football stadium in Töölö (neighborhood in Helsinki, Finland).

Pointed out Petteri Huurre, Head of Sport Facilities, Helsinki, Finland, “A stadium is the need of the hour and the Oulunkylä Sports Park provides the perfect setting. At the same time, however, it is also necessary to ensure that the sports park can be further tailor-made for holding more sporting events in the coming years.”

The Oulunkylä Sports Park in Helsinki, Finland, enjoys a basketball court, football and athletics fields and in Winter a large artificial ice rink is set up. The sports park also has an ice stadium, a gym and indoor sports facilities for guided sports such as dance and gymnastics.

‘Daily Finland’ further stated that the plan also involves developing the sports fields in the park to facilitate holding events of the local football clubs, the schools’ physical education classes and the residents’ recreation programs.

Helsinki is also examining the possibility of constructing residential buildings by the side of the Hirsipadontie Road and the junction area in the immediate vicinity of the Jokeri Light Rail Line.

Observed Outi Ruski, Architect, “The Oulunkylä Sports Park is one of the most diverse sports facilities in Helsinki and people from all around the City throng the park. Helsinki aims to develop the sports park to be even more functional so that it continues to serve various user groups widely and connect to the pleasant and lively environment around the Jokeri Light Rail Line.”

The planning process will begin soon wherein the capacity of the planned stadium will be determined and a survey will be carried out on how many houses can be built. A decision will also be taken as to whether the planned facility will be the City’s own project or a private undertaking.

A study will be carried out to assess what impact the holding of major acts in the planned venue will have on the neighborhood. A traffic plan will also be drawn out.

Public consultations on the project will be held in late 2025 following which the draft plan will be presented to the Urban Environment Committee.

Oulunkylä Sports Park

The Oulunkylä Sports Park is one of the most notable sports parks in Helsinki. The sports park includes an artificial ice rink and a training ice arena, a curling arena, an athletics track, a full-sized football field, and a training field for football. The Northern part of the park has a playground and an outdoor gym.

An overhaul of the cooling engineering system of the artificial ice rink and the ice arena next to it, built in 1977, is underway in the sports park. The maintenance building next to the artificial ice rink will also be renovated. The renovations will extend the ice arena’s life by six to eight years but the ice arena will require extensive renovation, and perhaps even demolition, within the next eight to 10 years and a new one will have to be built.
