Populous unveils stadium in New York Image: Populous

Populous, the global leader in sports and entertainment venue architecture and design, in partnership with the International Cricket Council (ICC), has unveiled a state-of-the-art, 34,000-seat modular cricket stadium for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in New York (US).

‘POPULOUS’ stated that the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium will host eight matches throughout the month of June, providing the fans and the spectators a world-class experience in a sustainably designed venue.

Kansas City (US)-based Populous is a global architectural and design practice specializing in sports facilities, arenas and convention centers, as well as the planning and design of major special events.

Christopher Lee, Managing Director EMEA, Populous, UK, is a Member of Coliseum – Global Sports Venue Alliance.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the global governing body of cricket. It was founded as the Imperial Cricket Conference in 1909 by representatives from Australia, England and South Africa. It was renamed as the International Cricket Conference in 1965 and adopted its current name in 1987. The ICC has its headquarters in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be the ninth edition of the T20 World Cup, a biennial Twenty20 international tournament contested by the men’s national teams and organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It is scheduled to be co-hosted by the West Indies and the United States from June 1st-29th, 2024.

This will be the first time the United States hosts a major cricket tournament. The tournament will feature 20 cricket-playing nations, including Uganda, who will be making their debut. The US will be joined in Group A by India, Pakistan, Canada, and Ireland.

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium is a 34,000-seat modular stadium that will host eight matches in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The stadium is being built on the grounds of the Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, New York (US), and is expected to be completed in three months time.

The stadium will feature VIP and hospitality suites, a party deck, cabanas, a fan zone, and food and drink outlets.

Observed Jeff Keas, Senior Principal at Populous, “Cricket is a truly global sport with a passionate, knowledgeable fan base and we’re thrilled to partner with the ICC and help bring the Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup to the United States. The modular, sustainable stadium we’ve designed will create a fantastic experience for both the US and international cricket fans and visitors to enjoy watching the world’s best teams and players.”

‘POPULOUS’ further stated that beginning construction in February, the stadium’s design utilizes sustainable, temporary solutions while meeting the stringent cricket standards that the ICC has in place -offering a world-first for the sport. The grandstands, originally used for the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, are being repurposed for the primary general admission seats, while over 80,000 square feet of hospitality space will include fan suites, cabanas and VIP clubs, offering an unparalleled experience. Additionally, a variety of food and beverage (F&B) outlets will help provide a top-tier experience for all guests attending the largest ICC event ever, in addition to the strategically placed media and broadcast areas.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix is a motor racing event that forms part of the Formula One World Championship taking place in Paradise, Nevada, in the United States. It is conducted as a night race on a temporary street circuit that includes parts of the Las Vegas Strip. The first race was held on November 18th, 2023.

The drop-in pitch, designed and curated in Australia, is being grown in Florida and will be transported to New York in early May, offering one of the finest wickets in the world. The development of the pitch is being overseen by the Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions and the outfield cultivated by the LandTek Group, the sports turf experts responsible for the fields for the Major League Baseball (MLB) teams New York Yankees, New York Mets and the Major League Soccer (MLS) team Inter Miami CF’s stadium and training fields. The Parker Company will project-manage the build on behalf of T20 Inc.

A drop-in pitch is a pitch that is prepared away from the ground or venue in which it is used and ‘dropped’ into place for a match to take place. This allows the multipurpose venues to host other sports and events with more versatility than a dedicated cricket ground would allow.

The Adelaide Oval Turf Solutions offers services for the construction, management, repair, and curation of turf. These services include: Civil work, drainage, irrigation, growing media installation, and laying turf.

The LandTek Group is a construction company that designs, builds and maintains the athletic facilities and sports complexes in North America. The company was founded in 1979 and is based in New York. It has hubs in New York, Florida and Virginia, and serves the entire East Coast of the United States. Its services include: Athletic field construction, synthetic turf field construction and maintenance, natural grass field construction and maintenance, site infrastructure improvements, fencing, concrete, building construction, running tracks, tennis courts, excavation, site preparation, drainage, and utility implementation as well as key specialized tasks as they arise.

Miami (US)-based The Parker Company is a global hospitality procurement company and offers an unparalleled level of service and industry expertise. Utilizing a proven methodology that combines global sourcing, significant buying power and comprehensive project experience, The Parker Company provides enterprising solutions to its clients.

Fans will have their opportunity to be a part of history by attending a festival of cricket and seeing the world’s best players in action, with eight ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 matches to be hosted at the venue between June 3rd-12th, including one of the sport’s biggest rivalries – India against Pakistan and USA versus India.
