The rugby union team and champions Leinster Rugby made a successful return to their revamped home ground – the Laya Arena in Ballsbridge, Ireland – by beating the Welsh rugby union team – Cardiff Rugby – in the United Rugby Championship (URC).

First Victory

‘newsTALK’ stated that the Irish province (Leinster) recorded their first victory of the 2026-2027 seasons in front of 20,600 supporters and condemned the ‘Blue and Blacks’ to a first loss.

Extensive Refurbishment

The Leinster Rugby has moved home after an extensive refurbishment of the RDS Arena, newly named the Laya Arena.

The Leinster Rugby is one of the four professional provincial club rugby union teams from the island of Ireland. They compete in the United Rugby Championship and the European Rugby Champions Cup (the top-tier competition for clubs who compete in a predominantly European league).

The United Rugby Championship (URC) is an annual rugby union competition involving professional teams from Ireland, Italy, Scotland, South Africa, and Wales (UK). The Championship represents the highest level of domestic club or franchise rugby in each of its constituent countries.

The 20,600-seat RDS Arena also known for sponsorship reasons as the Laya Arena, is a multipurpose sports stadium owned by the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) and located in the Dublin suburb of Ballsbridge, Ireland. It serves as the home of the Leinster Rugby.

‘newsTALK’ further stated that the head honcho of Leinster Rugby, Shane Nolan, revealed that the team is two years into a 25-year lease and there were some changes made during the refurbishments.

What’s New?

For starters, the capacity has increased, the Anglesey Stand has been revamped and there are some standing areas for the fans to get closer to the action.

‘Brilliant Fans’

Shared Nolan, “We moved out of the RDS Arena two and a half years ago and we’re all so excited to be back. The new capacity of the arena is 20,600. When we left it was just north of 18,000, so an extra 2,000 seats. If you remember the old Anglesey Stand, it was quite old, and while fans loved it, nearly every seat had a restricted view – that the old kind of pillars, stanchions, etc. That’s all removed, so every seat now is a full 100 percent view. We [also] have terraces in the Anglesey Stand at the front. We have room for 1,200 people which is it’s really, really important for us because the old stand we had room for 1,200 standing people and they are boisterous, loyal, brilliant fans.”

‘Big Moment’

Concluded Nolan, “We wanted to make sure that they were accommodated in the new, very modern stand. But, we still have those terraces. They’re right on the touchline. So, you literally can touch the players. Every money we make is invested back into the game but we work really hard. This is such a big moment for us because moving back into our home arena means we can really give a fan experience and fill our stadium.”
