A new 5,500-capacity music venue to open in Seatlle Image: Live Nation

Seattle’s (US) live music scene is getting a new stage.

‘newsroom.livenation.com’ stated that the American multinational entertainment company Live Nation and Seattle’s (US) First Avenue Entertainment have announced plans to build a new 5,500-capacity indoor music venue in Seattle’s South of Downtown (SODO) neighborhood thus expanding the city’s live music footprint and supporting continued growth in one of the world’s defining music markets. The venue is targeted to open in 2029.

Nostalgic-New

Designed by the Blueprint Studio, Live Nation’s in-house design and development group, in partnership with LMN Architects, the Seattle music venue will blend old-world craftsmanship with state-of-the-art concert technology. Inspired by the idea of a traditional Main Street gathering place the space will feature timeless materials such as brick, wood and glass alongside modern production capabilities thus creating a venue that feels both nostalgic and new.

Beverly Hills (US)-based Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. is an American multinational entertainment company that was founded in 2010 following the merger of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. It continues to operate both brands as subsidiary companies promoting and managing ticket sales for live entertainment internationally. It also owns and operates the entertainment venues and the festivals and manages the careers of the music artistes.

The First Avenue Entertainment LLLP is the corporate ownership group that holds the controlling stake in the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise.

Seattle (US)-based LMN Architects specializes in the planning and design of significant public and private facilities including the convention centers, the cultural arts venues, the education facilities, office, multifamily residential, hospitality mixed-use developments, and the other urban environments that celebrate and enrich the communities.

Boxyard Development

Located at The Boxyard (premier event destination), directly across from the 47,368-capacity T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, and steps from the 68,740-seat Lumen Field in Seattle, the concert venue is an addition to the existing Boxyard development expanding the facility that already welcomes thousands of guests at the Hatback Bar & Grill and Steelheads Alley each year plus a wide range of events at the Victory Hall including weddings, private events, watch parties, and more.

Project Overview

‘newsroom.livenation.com’ further stated that the new Seattle music venue is designed to support the artistes at a key stage in their careers – between the theaters and the arenas – with a purpose-built environment tailored to the needs of the modern touring productions. It will create more opportunities for the Seattle audiences to experience the national and international acts with flexible staging, advanced production infrastructure and artiste-first amenities.

In addition to the concerts the music venue is expected to host a range of live entertainment events throughout the year contributing to the continued growth of Seattle’s live entertainment ecosystem. The project will be integrated with the Victory Hall which will serve as a flexible venue lobby and special events space including programming and activations on game days.

Economic Impact

The venue is expected to contribute sustained, year-round economic activity in SODO. An independent analysis by Oxford Economics estimates the venue will generate $70 million in annual fan spending at the local restaurants, hotels and shops. That spending will produce $12 million in tax revenue and support a total economic impact of $129 million each year in the region. About half of that impact is expected to come from the visitors traveling from outside the Seattle-Tacoma Metro area. In addition, the venue will create more than 700 new jobs.

As the plans move forward Live Nation and First Avenue Entertainment will continue engaging the neighborhood groups, the local businesses and the city leaders to ensure the project delivers lasting cultural and economic benefits for Seattle.

Vibrant Entertainment District

The First Avenue Entertainment is committed to activating SODO as a vibrant entertainment district in Seattle while improving livability throughout the neighborhood. The First Avenue Entertainment owns and operates key entertainment properties in the stadium district with existing interest in the Major League Baseball (MLB) team Seattle Mariners, The Boxyard and the other real estate properties surrounding the T-Mobile Park.

‘Purpose-built Venue’

Averred Jeff Trisler, Regional President, Pacific Northwest, Live Nation, “Seattle has helped shape the sound of modern music, launching artistes who have influenced culture worldwide. This new purpose-built venue is an investment in continuing that legacy. We are enhancing the city’s ability to attract even more major tours to the Pacific Northwest while supporting the next generation of performers as they grow.”

‘New Opportunities’

Added Trevor Gooby, who oversees The Boxyard property for the First Avenue Entertainment, “SODO has long been a gathering place for sports and entertainment. This project builds on that foundation and creates new opportunities for the fans, the artistes and the local businesses year-round. We’re committed to working to ensure this venue reflects the neighborhood’s character and contributes to its continued growth while providing opportunities for both the musicians and the local music fans.”

‘Economic Activity’

Observed Joe Nguyen, President and head honcho, Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, “It’s exciting to see new energy and investment in Seattle’s live music and entertainment scene. This venue creates another important space for the artistes and the audiences while bringing more people, more economic activity and more support for the nearby businesses. It’s also a reminder that Seattle can grow and evolve in ways that strengthen our iconic entertainment districts while respecting the working waterfront and the industrial lands that are still such a critical part of our economy and identity.”

‘New Investment’

Remarked Ryan Calkins, Port of Seattle Commission President, “I appreciate the opportunity for early coordination as plans for this project take shape. That kind of engagement helps our region capture the benefits of new investment while thoughtfully upholding the priorities for freight mobility, the working waterfront and the critical jobs that keep our economy moving. I look forward to continued collaboration as this proposal develops.”
