The City of Málaga (Spain) has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2023 Final Four, the Basketball Champions League (BCL) announced recently. The eagerly anticipated event that will crown the 2022-2023 BCL champion is set to take place from May 12th-14th.

‘BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE’ stated that the host club – the Spanish professional basketball team Unicaja – the reigning Spanish Copa del Rey (an annual knockout football competition in Spanish football) champions, were the first team to secure a spot in this year’s Final Four after sweeping Ucam Murcia CB 2-0 in the Quarter-Finals and will compete in the showpiece event of the BCL for the first time in the club history.

The Basketball Champions League (BCL) is the premier European professional basketball competition for clubs launched by FIBA. The BCL is an innovative joint partnership between FIBAClubCo and 11 top European leagues. It is a fair competition based on sporting principles with teams qualifying through national leagues.

Mies (Switzerland)-based the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) is an association of national organizations which governs the sport of basketball worldwide. Originally known as the Fédération internationale de basket-ball amateur, in 1989 it dropped the word amateur from its name but retained the acronym.

‘BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE’ further stated that Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga team Telekom Baskets Bonn, that prevailed 2-1 in their Quarter-Final series against the French professional basketball club SIG Strasbourg, and Israel’s Israeli Basketball Premier League team Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem, who defeated the Greek professional basketball AEK 2-1, will make their maiden appearance at a BCL Final Four.

By contrast, the fourth title contender has enormous experience of BCL season-ending tournaments: Lenovo Tenerife (Spain), who eliminated their peer team Baxi Manresa 2-1 in the Quarter-Finals, are the defending BCL champions and also won the first ever edition of the competition, in 2016-2017, while they reached the Final in 2018-2019.

The two Semi-Final clashes will take place on May 12th, with the Final and the Third-Place Game to be held on May 14th.
