NEC Nijmegen stadium update February 2022 Image: NEC Nijmegen

The Dutch association football club NEC Nijmegen is the pride of Nijmegen (Netherlands). The top-flight’s residence – the Goffertstadion – is feather to the hat of the City of Nijmegen. But, over the years, the arena has almost become ramshackle.

The ‘NEC Nijmegen’ stated that plans have been drawn out to make the club’s financial health robust. The strategies adopted are:

  • Refurbishing the Goffertstadion and increasing the venue capacity;
  • Adopting revenue-generating measures; and
  • Real estate development with 200 apartments to come up right inside the stadium precincts or next to the facility which will be rented out.

NEC Nijmegen, commonly known as NEC, is a professional Dutch association football club based in Nijmegen (Netherlands). The club currently competes in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football, following promotion from the 2020-2021 Eerste Divisie.

The 12,500-capacity Goffertstadion, formerly known as McDOS Goffertstadion for sponsorship reasons, is a football stadium in Nijmegen, Netherlands, located in the Goffertpark. It is home to football club NEC. The stadium was opened on July 8th, 1939 by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands.

The ‘NEC Nijmegen’ further stated that based on the above plans, a long-term strategy has been developed which will allow the NEC to buy back the stadium from the Municipality of Nijmegen and be financially independent.

The above project has been named ‘Our Nest’.

Pale shadow of former self

The NEC Stadium which was literally built by the people of Nijmegen in the 1930s, is now a pale shadow of its former self and is crumbling. If steps are not initiated pronto, the stadium will just remain a memory of the past and will hugely affect the club.

Suggestions sought

High priority will be placed on the sustainability factor of the revamped stadium. Suggestions have been invited from the local residents of Nijmegen, entrepreneurs, local organizations, and people with out-of-the-box thinking, young and old alike.

The first consultation process will be held on March 7th and March 8th between 4 pm and 8 pm in the Goffertstadion precincts. One can register via the following link: https://www.nec-nijmegen.nl/nieuws/artikel/aanmelden-participatietraject-ons-nest.htm

‘Our Nest’

The project ‘Our Nest’ aims to give a fresh lease of life to the dilapidated Goffertstadion so that it stands out in the Nijmegen skyline. The Municipality of Nijmegen has extended its support to the main entities behind the development – NEC and KlokGroep.
