Architects ASCELA have revealed the design for a new district sports stadium in Rapinet, Chennai, India.

Architect Nishtha Sharma said in a LinkedIn post that the sports complex had been designed in ‘proud association’ with the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu.

As well as a football pitch surrounded by a running track, the complex includes courts for tennis, volleyball, badminton and basketball as well as spectator seating.

Sharma said, “Masterplanning an irregular polygon was no easy feat, but through innovative design thinking, we turned the challenge into an opportunity.

“Sustainability became our guiding star—integrating xeriscaping to conserve water, while the bold use of orange and white wasn’t just a color choice, it was a psychological strategy to captivate and inspire young minds.

“In the scorching heat of Chennai, we crafted a microclimate, ensuring comfort with natural cooling systems. The pavilion’s clerestory windows flood the interior with soft natural light, creating an uplifting atmosphere.

“Thoughtful buffer zones enhance the user experience, offering seamless transitions between spaces.

“But what truly grounds this design is its cultural essence—a stunning central pathway adorned with handcrafted Athangudi Tiles, celebrating Chennai’s artistic heritage.

“This stadium is not just a structure; it’s a living, breathing experience of sustainability, culture, and modern design!”

Tamil Nadu recently announced plans to build the world’s largest cricket stadium in the city of Coimbatore. It has recently floated tenders for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR).

The envisioned cricket stadium is expected to feature the largest spectator seating capacity in India.

It will include five-star amenities for members, VIPs and the corporate sectors as well as state-of-the-art facilities for the players including a lounge, media and broadcasting centers, cafeterias, restaurants, viewing galleries, and a cricket museum.

The stadium will also boast advanced features such as an indoor practice arena, a specialized indoor fielding zone, pitch curation training facilities, lecture theaters, and a high-performance center.

Proposals for a restaurant, spa, dormitories, and recreation facilities for the players are also being sought. Additionally, a members’ clubhouse, sports bar and restaurant are in the planning stages.
